The Heavy Equipment Mechanic | Field Technician role involves diagnosing and repairing heavy construction machinery in the field. To excel in this position, candidates should possess substantial experience with heavy equipment, be physically capable, and demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues both in the shop and on-site. A successful Heavy Equipment Mechanic will show a continuous commitment to enhancing operations, reducing turnaround times, optimizing work processes, and collaborating effectively to deliver high-quality customer service. This role is primarily based out of a local shop but requires travel to various job sites for equipment assessment and repairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Traveling to job sites to operate and inspect construction machinery and components to identify necessary repairs.
  • Diagnosing mechanical issues and interpreting schematics.
  • Conducting hydraulic troubleshooting and understanding hydraulic schematics.
  • Engaging in discussions regarding equipment issues with supervisors and colleagues as necessary.
  • Repairing, replacing, calibrating, adjusting, and/or rebuilding machinery components.
  • Testing repaired equipment to ensure proper functionality.
  • Inspecting, adding, and/or changing fluids and lubricants; checking and replacing worn parts; performing routine maintenance.
  • Completing welding and fabrication tasks as required.
  • Reading equipment manuals, service bulletins, and other resources; participating in training sessions to maintain and enhance equipment knowledge.
  • Reporting damaged or malfunctioning equipment to management.
  • Assisting in the procurement of parts, materials, and supplies necessary for repairs and maintenance.
  • Documenting work performed, time, and materials used for each task; maintaining related logs and records.
  • Utilizing a variety of hand and power tools, equipment, motor vehicles, and heavy machinery; performing additional duties as assigned by the Shop Manager.
  • Ensuring cleanliness, orderliness, and safety in the work environment.
  • Executing all duties in accordance with established procedures (TPR, B2W Maintain, etc.)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Prior mechanical experience with heavy machinery, including asphalt plant equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of diesel engines and construction equipment.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Basic welding proficiency.
  • Class A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
  • Certification as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic is advantageous.
  • Effective communication skills; bilingual abilities are a plus.
  • Understanding and adherence to all safety regulations.
  • Familiarity with Personal Protection Equipment requirements.
  • A strong commitment to safety practices.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to remain standing for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift arms above shoulder level for component installation and removal, as well as bend or stoop repeatedly.
  • Ability to manipulate tools in confined spaces.
  • Capacity to move heavy objects (50 lbs. or more) over distances.
  • Commitment to working safely without posing a risk to oneself or others.
  • Engagement in physical activities such as walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, stretching, and sitting.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, outdoors, and in various weather conditions.
  • Travel and occasional weekend work may be required.
