The State Office of Risk Management (SORM) is seeking a skilled Accountant to manage the preparation of financial documents, statements, and reports. This role is integral to a cooperative team of accounting specialists dedicated to supporting the Financial Management division. SORM's primary mission is to provide workers' compensation services to state entities, and your responsibilities will include reconciling claims fund activities, identifying discrepancies, analyzing fund balances, and assisting with significant legislative reports.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Accountant II

  • Assist with daily production and mail processing.
  • Prepare expenditure and cash flow reports.
  • Respond to inquiries via phone and email.
  • Prepare accounting entries and documents for transactions related to disbursements across all necessary accounts.
  • Process refunds and accounts payable entries in the CAPPS accounting system.
  • Research and reconcile revenue transactions.
  • Complete detailed assignments in recording, classifying, examining, and verifying financial records and reports.
  • Input accounting entries into CAPPS.
  • Recommend improvements to the accounting system and procedures as needed.
  • Verify data entered into the cash receipt system and process reversals and code corrections.
  • Keep management informed of ongoing activities and critical matters affecting operations.
  • Engage in independent job-related research and demonstrate initiative in problem-solving.
  • Provide customer service as required.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain relevant knowledge necessary for job functions.
  • Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed-upon schedule.
  • Ensure the security and confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including those related to ethics and integrity.

Accountant III – All functions of Accountant II, PLUS:

  • Analyze, create, and support the submission of state legislative-required reports.

QUALIFICATIONS

Accountant II

  • Two years of full-time experience in accounting, finance, procurement, or a closely related field.
  • Two or more years of experience with Microsoft applications.
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures.
  • Understanding of accounting theories, principles, and practices.
  • Familiarity with accounting software such as CAPPS, USAS, and MS Excel.
  • Knowledge of budget preparation and administration.
  • Understanding of relevant Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
  • Experience with State of Texas payment processing.
  • Proficiency in using a PC and associated software.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a professional environment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze complex financial documents.
  • Attention to detail in a high-volume setting.
  • Ability to prepare various financial statements and reports.

  • Ability to work independently and organize workload efficiently.
  • Ability to arrange for personal transportation for business-related travel.
  • Ability to work more than 40 hours as needed.

Accountant III – All qualifications of Accountant II, PLUS:

  • One additional year of experience in accounting or a related field.
  • One additional year of Microsoft Excel experience with data analysis skills.
  • Experience in supporting state legislative-required reports.

Accountant IV – All qualifications of Accountant III, PLUS:

  • One additional year of full-time experience in accounting or a related field.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including data visualization.
  • Experience in analyzing and submitting state legislative-required reports.
  • Knowledge of governmental accounting and budget control methods.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Experience with automated accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of State of Texas accounting regulations.
