Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice to join our team. As a key member of our Engineering and Maintenance Department, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and training in the Equipment Maintenance trade.
Key Responsibilities- Assist full-performance level Heavy Equipment Mechanics in performing equipment maintenance and repair work
- Learn to determine causes of operating problems and repair heavy equipment
- Develop skills in using manuals, technical guides, electrical diagrams, and various hand and power tools
- Perform preventive maintenance, determine causes of operating problems, and make repairs and modifications to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
- Assist in preparing and maintaining work orders, trouble calls, and preventive maintenance
- Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of hire
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Ability to drive a pick-up truck and learn to use similar vehicles
- Ability to work safely and knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures
- Ability to speak and write effectively
- Ability to successfully complete an Airports Authority background investigation
- Completion of at least one trades course in high school or currently enrolled in a degree or certificate program at a trades school
- Ability to diagnose and repair Plug-in Hybrid (EV) and Gas Hybrid vehicles
Work is physically demanding and requires stooping, crouching, or positioning self to access confined and hard-to-reach places. May work on a slippery surface, particularly when work is performed outside during inclement weather or due to a chemical spill.
Work may require the ability to lift, push/pull, or position items weighing up to 100 pounds. Work is typically performed on an airfield around large operating aircraft and outside in all kinds of weather.
