Job Summary

The Water Treatment Plant Operator will perform work of routine difficulty under the guidance and direction of the STP Supervisor and Lead Operator. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and controlling electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate the flow of raw water into the treating plant.

Responsibilities
  • Perform water testing and calculate chemical additions for treatment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • Starts and stops machinery and pumps, operates valves, observes operation of equipment, and keeps readings in logs.
  • Investigate and resolve basic abnormal conditions.
  • Keep a daily handwritten log of activities that is auditable by state and federal agencies.
  • Use hand and power tools to make repairs and to perform building and grounds cleaning and maintenance.
  • Practice and adhere to all company safety and operational policies.
  • Control treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use.
  • Operate and control electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate the flow of raw water into the treating plant.
  • Calculate and add specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, and lime into water or adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water.
  • Start agitators to mix chemicals and allow impurities to settle to the bottom of the tank.
  • Turn valves to regulate water through filter beds to remove impurities.
  • Pump purified water into water mains.
  • Monitor panel board and adjust controls to regulate flow rates, loss of head pressure, and water elevation and distribution of water.
  • Clean tanks and filter beds, using backwashing (reverse flow of water).
  • Repair and lubricate machines and equipment, using hand- and power tools.
  • Test water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities, using colorimeter, turbidimeter, and conductivity meter.
  • Dump chemicals such as alum into tanks to coagulate impurities and reduce acidity.
  • Record data, such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, and water pressure.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Consistently produce quality products and service.
  • Complete all training within the required timeline.
  • Perform all work in a safe and secure manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
  • Must be a high school graduate or GED.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Water Treatment license.
  • Must have a valid Colorado Water Distribution License.
  • Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
  • Certified Pool Operator license preferred.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (Tier 1) background check.
  • Must maintain licenses and/or credentials required for this position.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Must possess the ability to interact well with others in a team setting or alone and be able to change jobs on short notice.
  • Must be capable of working under tight time constraints in a high-volume environment with multiple priorities.
  • Highly motivated, flexible, organized, and must be detail-oriented.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to maintain the ability to access government worksites.
  • Must have practical knowledge of worksite safety, occupational hazards, and standard safety practices.
  • Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions (extreme cold/heat, etc.).
  • Must be able to work alternate and extended shift schedules when necessary to meet the customer's mission requirements, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to perform on-call duties when necessary and report to work within the required timeframe from notification.
  • Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must have a safe driving record, as defined by Company policy, to operate a company vehicle.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a drug/alcohol test and a criminal record check.
