Team Dynamics: Advanced Vision Technology - Deep Learning R&D

We are seeking a Research Scientist to join our AI R&D team within the Advanced Vision Technology division. In this role, you will engage in the exploration, design, implementation, and deployment of cutting-edge deep learning algorithms tailored for industrial machine vision applications. Your work will aim to innovate for our customers, making advanced technology accessible across various platforms. You will utilize the latest advancements in computer vision and natural language processing, including transformers and generative AI, to address practical challenges in manufacturing, such as defect detection, barcode interpretation, robotic navigation, and image synthesis. Collaborating with experts in software and hardware engineering, product management, sales, and marketing, you will tackle diverse issues across multiple sectors, including consumer goods, aerospace, automotive, logistics, pharmaceuticals, robotics, and electronics.

Your research will typically address questions such as:
  • What neural network architectures are optimal for resolving real-world vision challenges in industrial settings?
  • How can we enhance the speed of neural networks on devices with limited power?
  • What strategies can we employ to quickly adapt neural networks to new tasks with minimal data?
  • How can we integrate the latest advancements in speech and natural language processing into computer vision solutions?
  • What methods can we use to combine traditional computer vision techniques with deep learning to broaden our problem-solving capabilities?
  • How do we effectively productize advanced technologies, ensuring ease of deployment for non-experts?
Within our team, development is primarily conducted in Python. Ideal candidates will possess experience in deep learning, image analysis, machine vision, statistical learning, or signal processing. Success in this position may lead to increased responsibilities within Cognex.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and develop modern deep learning algorithms for computer vision, focusing on efficiency in power, latency, and data usage.
  • Translate business needs into rapid prototypes to showcase capabilities to stakeholders.
  • Work closely with software and hardware engineering teams, as well as product teams, to transition prototypes into scalable, user-friendly solutions.
  • Stay updated on the latest research in the field and propose algorithmic improvements applicable to Cognex products.
  • Exhibit thought leadership and manage complex research initiatives amidst uncertainty.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers within the team.
Qualifications:
  • Experience in developing and optimizing deep learning algorithms in relevant areas such as computer vision, natural language processing, or speech recognition.
  • In-depth knowledge of convolutional neural networks and transformer models.
  • Proficiency in at least one deep learning framework, such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Strong programming capabilities.
  • Creative, driven individuals eager to contribute to a rapidly growing company.
  • Demonstrated experience in transforming innovative concepts into scalable implementations.
Educational Requirements:
  • PhD in deep learning or a related field from a reputable engineering institution.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in deep learning or data science.
