Under the guidance of the Dispensing Operations Pharmacist, the Oncology Pharmacy Technician will play a crucial role in the preparation and distribution of oral oncology medications for patients. This position encompasses all aspects of medication dispensing within the pharmacy, including precise counting and filling of prescriptions, managing inventory, and ensuring safe packing and shipping of medications.

The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities associated with this role, relevant regulations, and the policies and procedures of the organization. Additional tasks and projects may be assigned as necessary, all while adhering to regulatory standards and company protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Workflow Initiation

Commence the pharmacy dispensing process utilizing the conveyor belt system.

Responsibilities include:

  • Verifying and confirming shipping details, promptly generating prescriptions and labels, and attaching necessary documentation.
  • Consistently striving to meet the needs of patients and internal stakeholders with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Addressing challenges with a solution-oriented approach and proactively seeking enhancements to the patient and internal customer service experience.

2. Prescription Processing

Maintain the efficiency of the distribution and dispensing workflow.

Responsibilities include:

  • Accurately and efficiently filling prescriptions at designated workstations while managing the select lot queue.
  • Daily maintenance of the CPR+ select lot queue.

3. Packaging and Distribution

Ensure secure packing and shipping of orders in compliance with all applicable State, Federal, and Accreditation standards.

4. Inventory Management

Act as the primary contact for medication and supply deliveries. Participate in inventory management and assist in maintaining stock levels.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting monthly inventory counts and making necessary adjustments in the pharmacy dispensing software.
  • Ensuring the removal of expired medications from inventory at least one month prior to their expiration date.
  • Assisting in the ordering and stocking of specialty oral oncology medications and related supplies.

5. Record Keeping

Maintain essential records related to prescription drug dispensing as mandated by the organization and the State Board of Pharmacy, including documentation in CPR+, ONCO, and ORCA; manufacturer notifications; recalls; and daily dispense logs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining required dispensing documentation for specialty medications as specified by manufacturers and ensuring proper records of daily dispense logs and proof of prescription delivery.

6. Compliance and Training

Adhere to compliance guidelines and complete necessary training.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the safe disposal of biohazardous waste, if applicable, and maintaining receipts for waste pickup.
  • Participating in mandatory staff meetings and annual safety/OSHA training sessions.
  • Assisting in the training of new employees on relevant job duties.
  • Completing Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training as required by law and reporting any suspected issues to the Pharmacy Compliance Officer.
  • Engaging in the Pharmacy Quality Management Program by identifying quality-related events and reporting them for documentation.
  • Maintaining continuing education requirements for licensure and participating in ongoing training regarding the handling and dispensing of new oral oncology medications, with yearly competency demonstrations as required.
  • Performing additional duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPT) required.

Experience:

  • Preferred five years of experience in specialty, retail, or hospital pharmacy as a pharmacy technician.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, is preferred.

Standard Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Occasional overtime and weekend shifts may be required based on operational needs.
