Ophthalmic Clinic Technician

Retina Consultants of Texas is seeking an Ophthalmic Clinic Technician to provide accurate documentation, summarization of patient's medical history, and perform preliminary ocular examination. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining patient flow and communication regarding appointment status to patients and Clinic Managers.
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain patient history, including chief complaint, history of present illness, patient and family history of both ocular and general illnesses, history of allergies, and current medications.
- Accurately perform and document visual acuity, confrontational visual fields, evaluation of motility, pupillary function tests, dilation, and ocular tonometry.
- Provide compassionate patient care throughout the clinic flow.
- Perform opening and closing duties, including inventory count, prepping drugs as needed, and sterile instruments.
- Maintain cleanliness in exam and procedure rooms.
- Maintain backup levels of supply stock in exam and procedure rooms.
- Provide backup to the ophthalmic photographer performing OCTs.
- Contact patients who have no-showed to appointments and reschedule as needed.
- Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as needed.
- Troubleshoot equipment as necessary, including projector, tonopen, and autoclave.
- Occasionally assist physician with laser procedures, injections, and minor procedures.
Requirements
- Ability to perform comprehensive work-ups.
- Ability to educate patients regarding instillation of eye drops and other instructions related to physician's treatment plan.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organization with attention to detail and ability to multitask.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Ability to use multiple computer systems.
- Training and understanding of HIPAA requirements.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma required; some college preferred.
- One to two years' experience as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
- Certification as an ophthalmic assistant preferred.
- Valid CPR certification required.
Physical Abilities
- Must be able to move frequently from standing and sitting depending on exam room configuration during clinic sessions.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to type or write legibly in a dimly-lit setting.
- Must be able to hear softly spoken words.
- Must be able to add support for patients getting in and out of exam chairs.
- Lifting required up to 50 pounds.
