San Francisco, California, United States Observable Full time

Observable is transforming the way organizations develop and share data applications by equipping developers with essential tools to create outstanding dashboards, applications, and reports. Our open-source Framework empowers developers to build dashboards locally, while our secure hosting service facilitates seamless sharing of data applications, enabling teams to uncover deeper insights collaboratively. We are proud of our extensive community of data practitioners who are passionate about Observable, and we are committed to expanding our reach to teams and businesses of all sizes.

We are seeking a Senior Software Developer to become a vital member of our compact engineering team. Candidates should possess experience in professional web development, with a willingness to consider those with a stronger background in either backend or frontend development. This role involves working on a new segment of our platform, where the majority of the features you will develop are original creations rather than updates or maintenance tasks. You will engage in technical design and architecture alongside coding responsibilities. Our work encompasses the entire stack, from the open-source Framework library (TypeScript) to the cloud infrastructure that supports it (Cloudflare edge workers, R2, S3, Docker), the API (TypeScript, Node, Postgres), and the frontend (TypeScript, React).

While you may not have experience with every technology mentioned, a strong enthusiasm for learning is essential. As part of a small team, you will need to adapt quickly, as we do not have extensive formal training programs; however, our team is always eager to assist and engage in pair programming, fostering a culture of mutual teaching and learning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions.
  • Collaborate within a close-knit engineering team that deploys new code into production multiple times daily.
  • Write efficient code, create reliable systems, and rapidly develop prototypes.
  • Demonstrate initiative, prioritize tasks, manage workloads, and adhere to project timelines.
  • Understand user needs (including participating in user support) and enhance their experience alongside the quality of our code.
  • Work effectively with a diverse team of professionals (engineering, design, product, marketing).
Qualifications
  • 6+ years of experience in feature development across both frontend and backend technologies.
  • Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages, including but not limited to: JavaScript, Python, Go, or Ruby.
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and software design, complemented by solid investigative and debugging skills.
  • Familiarity with open-source, cloud, or application platforms.
  • Ability to produce readable, maintainable, self-documenting, or well-documented code that addresses complex challenges with simple, elegant solutions.

Join Our Team

Observable's comprehensive solution encompasses our open-source Framework that developers utilize to create high-performance, expressive data applications; a platform for hosting projects; and tools for managing data workflows. Our team operates fully remotely, and we strive to cultivate a collaborative, data-driven culture while maintaining a fast-paced environment.

We appreciate your interest and look forward to connecting with you.
