Job Summary

The Veterinary Assistant will provide critical support to the veterinary team at Colorado State University, working closely with faculty veterinarians, residents, and technical staff to deliver exceptional care to horses. This role requires a strong foundation in horse handling and restraint, as well as experience with surgical procedures and instrumentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist students and residents with pre-op and post-op surgeries, including catheter placements, blood draws, sedating, injections, and bandage changes.
  • Present horses for lameness exams, utilizing patient handling and restraint techniques for all ages and breeds.
  • Support surgeries by sterile prepping, setting up/cleaning, and assisting with circulating nurse duties.
Working Conditions

This is a variable-hour position, requiring a minimum of 20-30 hours per week, with occasional weekend emergencies and late-night on-call shifts. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and teamwork skills, with a strong commitment to providing exceptional patient care.

Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications: Horse handling experience, including education in methods for horse restraint and safety.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Surgical knowledge of sterile procedures and instrumentation.
