Job Summary

The Mental Health Technician plays a vital role in the treatment team, providing continuous patient care, supervision, and interaction. This position requires a strong understanding of psychiatric patient care techniques and mental illness.

Key Responsibilities
  • Accountable for patient safety through observation rounds and compliance with suicide and elopement precautions.
  • Accompany patients to the cafeteria and supervise meals.
  • Orient new patients to the unit and their room.
  • Teach and assist patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
  • Complete community safety searches as indicated.
  • Complete report sheets as directed.
  • Comply with standards for infection control, OSHA regulations, and risk management.
  • Recognize and respond to priorities in patient care responsibilities.
  • Supervise and assist patients in all patient areas.
  • Check patients for contraband and manage patient valuables and belongings.
  • Report suspected change in condition and/or potential crisis situations to the nurse in charge.
Requirements
  • Current BLS, First Aid, Handle with Care, and Verbal De-Escalation certifications.
  • Two years of related patient care experience.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques with understanding of mental illness.
  • Nursing Assistant Certification or higher.
Work Environment

The Mental Health Technician will work in a fast-paced environment with varying temperatures and conditions. The ability to stand, sit, or walk for up to six hours, and safely escort patients using stairs and elevators, is required.
