Status: Part-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt
Average Work Hours: 20 hours per week
Role Summary
The primary role of the Equine Care Specialist is to maintain the health and well-being of the horses, as well as the upkeep of the facilities and pastures. This position requires collaboration with the Barn Manager, Executive Director, and other team members to effectively manage the operations and programs at GaitWay.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the maintenance of pastures, including water tanks, fencing, pest management, and grass health as directed by the supervisor.
- Ensure fresh water is available for all horses and maintain cleanliness of water buckets.
- Perform stall cleaning, hoof care, and apply fly deterrents as needed.
- Provide appropriate feed and hay to horses as instructed.
- Maintain cleanliness of the stall aisle post-feeding sessions.
- Report any safety hazards or maintenance needs to the office promptly.
- Manage the turning in and out of horses as per instructions.
- Assist the Barn Manager and Maintenance Technician with equipment and facility upkeep as assigned.
- Support special events as required.
- Immediately report any health concerns regarding horses to the supervisor.
- Ensure cleanliness of the outhouse and manage trash disposal as necessary.
- Coordinate trash placement for collection on designated days.
Additional Duties
Collaborate with fellow staff members to enhance the overall functioning of the organization. Foster a safe environment for horses, staff, volunteers, and riders, ensuring humane treatment and handling of horses. Engage in staff training, special events, and various projects as needed. Uphold professional standards in appearance, communication, and punctuality. Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to follow both oral and written instructions, communicate effectively, and possess strong observational skills. The role requires the ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, stoop, crawl, twist, reach overhead, pull, bend, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 lbs. Flexibility to work during holidays and weekends, as well as the ability to work in varying weather conditions, is essential. Fine motor skills are also necessary for this position.
