Job Overview and Responsibilities

The Pharmacy Technician will operate under the guidance of the Pharmacist I, Pharmacist II, and/or Pharmacy Services Manager within the Pharmacy at the Department of State Hospitals. The individual in this role will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

• Adhering to pharmacy and nursing policies, procedures, and administrative directives related to medication management.

• Preparing Unit Dose patient containers.

• Managing Automated Dispensing Devices across the facility.

• Operating and maintaining the repackaging machine.

• Refilling the repackaging machine as necessary.

• Pre-packaging medication tablets and capsules for unit dose and/or Automated Dispensing Devices.

• Sending validated physician medication orders to the relevant units via fax.

• Organizing and filing documentation.

• Restocking emergency kits for units.

• Collaborating with units regarding unit dose procedures and Automated Dispensing Devices.

• Assisting pharmacists in preparing prescriptions for patients being discharged.

• Accurately interpreting physician's orders.

• Working closely with pharmacists to ensure the precision of data collection, interpretation, and entry of physician orders.

• Coordinating with unit staff for the retrieval of copies of physician orders.

• Processing medication transfer orders for patients.

• Demonstrating knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations, and medications (including brand names, generics, dosage forms, and strengths).

• Managing purchases from primary and individual vendors.

• Resolving purchasing-related issues.

• Stocking shelves, rotating inventory, and checking for expired items.

• Participating in inspections of medication rooms.

• Updating shelves with vendor-specific labels.

Eligibility Criteria:
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service examination for this classification, OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Currently employed with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable one (employees seeking consideration based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications as per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Previously held permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or a comparable one.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid Pharmacy Technician registration certificate issued by the State Board of Pharmacy as outlined in Sections 4115 and 4202 of the Business and Professions Code. Registration requirements may be waived during the first year of employment for individuals employed as Pharmacy Technicians assisting in prescription filling for patients in facilities operated by the State Departments of Mental Health or Developmental Services. AND Either I: One year of clerical experience in a pharmacy, relieving a pharmacist of clerical or subprofessional duties, primarily involving stocking pharmaceutical supplies or typing labels. [Experience in California state service must be at a level not less than Office Assistant (General), Range B.] (Academic education beyond the 12th grade may substitute for experience on a basis of one year of education in a science or mathematical field equating to six months of experience. Students nearing completion of coursework fulfilling these requirements will be admitted to the examination but must provide evidence of completion before being considered for appointment.) OR II: Completion of an academic curriculum and formal on-the-job training program for Pharmacy Technicians.

Working Environment:
This position requires work within a secured treatment area.
Special Requirements:

Candidates must pass a drug screening prior to hiring. Candidates must clear a background investigation prior to hiring. You MUST include your Pharmacy Technician registration/license number in your application.
