Position Overview:

The Senior Commercial Underwriter is responsible for evaluating new and renewal credit requests for Commercial and Industrial (C&I) and Commercial Real Estate (CRE) transactions. This role involves analyzing working capital lines of credit, asset-based lending, commercial real estate loans, and equipment financing, primarily for businesses with revenues exceeding $5 million. The underwriter collaborates with Client Solutions Managers (CSMs) and Relationship Managers to present findings that include business rationale and risk mitigation strategies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough analysis of business operations, industry trends, and financial data to assess credit requests, identifying potential risks that could affect repayment.
  • Prepare precise and timely credit recommendations with minimal supervision, ensuring all quantitative analyses are documented and risk ratings are accurately applied.
  • Monitor borrower financial performance in accordance with loan agreements, ensuring compliance with bank guidelines and timely resolution of any violations.
  • Work closely with CSMs and Relationship Managers to provide insights into customer financial needs and potential opportunities for relationship expansion.
  • Participate in customer and prospect meetings as necessary, gaining exposure to portfolio management under the guidance of experienced team members.
  • Oversee the work of junior underwriters or credit analysts, ensuring high-quality credit reports and providing mentorship as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant banking regulations and internal policies, staying informed about regulatory changes.
  • Actively promote the Umpqua corporate culture through positive engagement and personal initiative.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or equivalent experience.
  • 7-10 years of experience in commercial underwriting or credit analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of credit policies and financial statement analysis.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly to diverse audiences.

Work Environment:

This position requires full onsite engagement.
