The Bioinformatics and Computational Science (BACS) Directorate plays a vital role in this mission by leveraging advanced computing technologies to address both fundamental and applied biomedical research challenges. This includes data science, supporting essential operations, and developing national data resources.
The Advanced Biomedical and Computational Science (ABCS) group within BACS serves as a collaborative hub for scientists specializing in machine learning, clinical and genomic integration, computational chemistry, and bioinformatics analysis of omics data. ABCS is dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies for large-scale data modeling and analysis, translating scientific inquiries into technical solutions for cancer and biomedical research.
Research Focus: The HIV Dynamics and Replication Program is dedicated to interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding drug-resistant HIV and its interactions with host cells. This includes studies on viral entry, genome integration, immune evasion, and replication, as well as other significant viral pathogens.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support researchers in the HIV Dynamics and Replication Program.
- Engage in collaborative research with NCI scientists, including experimental design and computational analysis.
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Manage and enhance RNA-Seq and other sequencing workflows.
- Review literature on retroviral integration and maintain relevant databases.
- Communicate project updates clearly to stakeholders.
- Assist in writing and revising scientific manuscripts.
- Follow established protocols and suggest improvements for efficiency.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or four years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- No prior work experience required with a Bachelor's degree.
- Strong understanding of virology, particularly RNA retroviruses.
- Experience in developing and maintaining Python workflows for NGS sequencing.
- Proficiency in R scripting.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's or PhD degree.
- Two years of progressively responsible experience.
- Commitment to addressing biological challenges and effective communication of solutions.
- Experience with relational databases.
- Ability to learn independently in a dynamic research environment.
