Position Overview:

The Inpatient Psychiatric Registered Nurse is tasked with overseeing the healthcare of adolescent patients (ages 4-18) and/or young adult patients (ages 18-35) facing psychiatric and mental health challenges. This role necessitates comprehensive psychosocial, physical, and behavioral evaluations tailored to specific conditions, along with the delivery of personalized interventions derived from these assessments. The Psychiatric RN is accountable for assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and supervising nursing care within their designated area, adhering to the policies and procedures of PrairieCare.

Work Schedule: Rotating Day/Evening shifts (no straight day shifts available) – includes every other weekend, with options for night and evening roles – Shift Differentials apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts assessments and monitors the daily functioning of child and adolescent patients, assisting in the management of mental health symptoms.
  • Employs informed, results-driven critical thinking to ensure safe, high-quality care and sound nursing judgment.
  • Continuously evaluates personal expertise through ongoing self-assessments.
  • Collaborates effectively with the healthcare team, seeking timely guidance and providing constructive feedback to maintain safe patient care.
  • Utilizes therapeutic strategies to manage environments, aiming to minimize the use of restraints and seclusion whenever feasible.
  • Plans and leads nursing groups with patients as scheduled during shifts.
  • Responsible for nursing assessments upon patient admission and necessary discharge planning in the hospital program.
  • Documents and communicates essential medical and psychiatric information accurately, both verbally and in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Administers medications accurately in accordance with established policies and best nursing practices, including verifying allergies and monitoring for side effects.
  • Performs medical interventions as directed by physicians in a timely manner, including necessary testing and documentation of results.
  • Maintains safe infection control practices, including proper hand hygiene and managing suspected infectious diseases.
  • Provides care in a respectful, non-discriminatory manner, sensitive to the developmental stages and diversity of patients and their families.
  • Ensures confidentiality regarding patient and family matters.
  • Maintains up-to-date competency in child and adolescent psychiatric nursing, including knowledge of restraint and seclusion protocols.
  • Demonstrates the ability to intervene in crisis situations using de-escalation techniques and least restrictive interventions.
  • Leads and delegates tasks to Psychiatric Technicians within their scope of practice.
  • Functions independently and may serve as Charge Nurse when required.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program with a Nursing Degree; BSN preferred. Current RN licensure with the Minnesota State Board of Nursing is mandatory.
  • Preferred: At least one year of psychiatric/mental health nursing experience within the last two years.
  • Possession of professional certifications, such as RN ANCC Certification in Mental Health Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, or Holistic Health, is advantageous.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and make sound judgments in high-pressure situations.
  • Proficient in multitasking, time management, and prioritization.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, demonstrating a positive teamwork attitude.
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and EHR systems.
  • Ability to respond quickly and calmly as part of a team in potentially volatile situations.
  • Commitment to quality management, continuously seeking ways to enhance and ensure accuracy in care.
  • After training, capable of managing disruptive and challenging patient behaviors.
