Inpatient Psychiatric Registered Nurse

Position Overview:
The Inpatient Psychiatric Registered Nurse is tasked with overseeing the care of patients, both adolescents (ages 4-18) and young adults (ages 18-35), who are facing psychiatric and mental health challenges. This role necessitates comprehensive assessments—psychosocial, physical, and behavioral—tailored to the specific needs of each patient, along with the implementation of personalized interventions based on these evaluations.
Work Schedule:
Shifts will rotate between Day and Evening, with no straight day shifts available. The role includes weekend duties and opportunities for evening and night shifts, which come with shift differentials.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts thorough assessments and monitors the daily functioning of child and adolescent patients, aiding in the management of mental health symptoms.
- Exhibits critical thinking skills to ensure safe, high-quality care and sound nursing judgment.
- Continuously evaluates personal expertise through self-assessments.
- Collaborates effectively with the healthcare team, seeking timely guidance and providing constructive feedback to ensure patient safety.
- Utilizes therapeutic strategies to manage patient environments, aiming to minimize the use of restraints and seclusion.
- Plans and leads nursing groups for patients as scheduled during shifts.
- Responsible for conducting nursing assessments upon patient admission and coordinating necessary discharge planning.
- Maintains accurate documentation of medical and psychiatric information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), including patient assessments and responses to interventions.
- Administers medications accurately, adhering to policies and best practices, while educating patients and families about their medications.
- Performs physician-ordered interventions promptly, including necessary testing and documentation of results.
- Implements safe infection control measures and educates patients on hygiene practices.
- Delivers care in a respectful, non-discriminatory manner, sensitive to the developmental stages and diversity of patients and their families.
- Ensures confidentiality regarding patient and family matters.
- Maintains current competencies in child and adolescent psychiatric nursing, including effective de-escalation techniques.
- Demonstrates the ability to intervene in crisis situations using de-escalation methods and least restrictive interventions.
- Leads and delegates tasks to Psychiatric Technicians within their scope of practice.
- Functions independently and may take on Charge Nurse responsibilities.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program with a Nursing Degree; BSN preferred. Current RN licensure with the Minnesota State Board of Nursing is mandatory.
- Preferred: At least one year of psychiatric/mental health nursing experience within the last two years.
- Possession of professional certifications, such as RN ANCC Certification in Mental Health Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, or Holistic Health, is advantageous.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Effective communication skills for making sound judgments in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and prioritize effectively.
- Proficient in verbal and written communication, demonstrating a positive attitude towards teamwork.
- Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office and EHR systems.
- Ability to respond swiftly and calmly in potentially volatile situations.
- Commitment to quality management and continuous improvement.
- Willingness to manage challenging patient behaviors after appropriate training.
