Job Overview

Position Summary

As an Underground Utility Locator, your primary responsibility will be to utilize advanced mapping technology and specialized tools to accurately identify and mark underground utilities, including cables and pipes. This crucial role is essential for preventing damage and ensuring the safety of the public.

The initial pay rate ranges from $18.00 to $25.00 per hour, depending on your experience in utility locating.

Key Responsibilities

1. Responding to Requests and Emergencies:

  • Travel to various locations in response to routine requests and urgent situations.
  • Adjust location as necessary to address immediate concerns effectively.

2. Employing Mapping Tools and Equipment:

  • Utilize provided mapping resources and specialized equipment to locate underground utilities.
  • Identify utilities such as electrical lines, gas pipelines, and communication cables.

3. Marking Utility Locations:

  • Clearly indicate utility locations using paint and flags.
  • Convey pertinent information to excavation teams and relevant authorities.

4. Managing After-Hours Call-Outs:

  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls as per the established rotation.
  • Maintain regular communication with utility managers, excavation crews, and contractors regarding locate issues.

5. Prioritizing Work and Interpreting Maps:

  • Assess and prioritize locate requests to determine the most efficient routing.
  • Interpret utility-provided maps to effectively identify underground utilities.

6. Field Work Environment:

  • Spend the majority of work hours in the field, with some administrative duties.
  • Conduct utility locates in diverse locations, navigating various environmental hazards.

7. Utilizing Specialized Equipment:

  • Perform utility locates by sending signals through cables or pipes and tracing their paths above ground using specialized tools.
  • Mark the identified paths with paint and flags for accurate identification.

Equipment Provided:

Each Utility Locator will receive:

  • Company vehicle
  • Laptop computer
  • Digital camera
  • Cell phone
  • Broadband internet device
  • Utility locating equipment (approximately 15 pounds)

Position Status & Schedule: This is a full-time role, operating Monday through Friday, with potential overtime as required.

Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma or GED
  2. Valid, unexpired Driver's License
  3. Preferred experience in field technician roles or similar outdoor service positions

Additional Skills & Abilities:

  • Previous experience in utility locating or damage prevention is advantageous but not essential
  • Technical proficiency and comfort with technology
  • Adaptability to work in varying weather conditions and diverse job sites
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with team members and clients
  • Physical capability to walk, stand, lift, and traverse 3-5 miles outdoors in various environments

Note: This position requires a pre-employment background check and drug screening, along with random drug tests.
