About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Mechanic to join our team at the Iowa Department of Transportation. As a Mechanic, you will play a vital role in ensuring the efficiency and safety of our fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform major and minor repairs on light duty fleet vehicles
  • Replace engines and electrical systems
  • Repair transmissions and differentials
  • Service air conditioning and tires
  • Replace brakes, drums, valves, hoses, and brake chambers
  • Repair chassis and suspension
  • Perform road tests and operate equipment after repairs
  • Record keeping, including program-specific paperwork
  • Input data into Fleetio & Workday
  • Use computers for maintenance record keeping
  • Check in and prepare new vehicles up to one ton for fleet usage
  • Mount amber lights and install vehicle-related switches
  • Verify numbers and install decals and equipment tags
  • Top off all fluids and check/repair manufacturer defects
  • Install any required new components
  • Maintain technical proficiency in vehicle maintenance
Requirements
  • Three years of full-time work experience in automotive or heavy equipment mechanic work
  • A total of three years of education and/or full-time experience, where 30 semester hours of post-high-school education in automotive or heavy equipment mechanics equals one year of full-time experience
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Mechanic Helper
