The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing phlebotomy procedures under the clinical supervision of licensed personnel and general supervision of the area Supervisor, Assistant Director, Lab Administrator, and Director of Laboratories. The primary goal is to provide ancillary support to laboratories in drawing blood from patients for testing and diagnostic procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Draw blood for laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in all areas and for all patient populations, including newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Provide instruction to patients to obtain test samples as required, assess patient limitations, and exhibit appropriate behaviors to patients.
- Maintain strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA) at all times.
- Identify patient's name and date of birth by scanning the inpatient ID band before venipuncture is performed.
- Follow procedures for identification of outpatient and specimens and perform related documentation.
- Understand and practice the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals.
- Follow HHC policy and procedures for the clinical laboratory.
- Register patients in the EPIC System, if needed, and order tests.
- Maintain required records and logs, file ancillary log sheets, submit and/or record statistics daily, and perform other clerical tasks in support of blood drawing activities.
- Assist in procuring, inspecting, cleaning, and storing of related phlebotomy/laboratory equipment, including venipuncture trays and carts.
- Adhere to infection control practices, including standard precautions, isolation techniques, tray decontamination, and recommended hand washing techniques.
- Perform related work, such as weekly decontamination of phlebotomy trays and completing individual monthly logs.
- Assist in training new phlebotomists.
- Answer and direct calls to the appropriate department, relay messages in a timely manner, and address issues or situations that require immediate or additional attention.
- Attend and participate in continuing education and in-service programs, internal/external quality assurance, performance improvement activities and programs, departmental and team/committee meetings, and facility-wide training.
- Graduation from a senior high school or evidence of having passed an examination for a High School Equivalency Diploma.
- Satisfactory combination and education, training, and experience.
- Successful completion of the prescribed training program for Phlebotomist.
