Compensation Overview:

Hourly Pay Range:
$25.65 USD to $37.19 USD
Note: Per Diem staff are required to be available for a minimum of 3 complete shifts monthly, including at least one weekend shift in departments with weekend staffing. Availability must be communicated prior to the scheduling process closure and should align with open shifts. Employees must also be available for one premium pay summer holiday and one premium pay winter holiday.

Role Summary:

The Pharmacy Support Specialist plays a vital role in the preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals, ensuring the maintenance of medication inventory and patient records in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.

Key responsibilities include compounding sterile solutions, delivering medications, restocking automated dispensing systems (ADS), and preparing medications for oral administration and unit dosing from bulk packaging.

This position operates under the guidance of the Pharmacy Operations Supervisor and reports directly to the Pharmacy Director.

Qualifications:

Education:
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program or equivalent education/experience.

Experience:
Preferred one year of experience as a pharmacy technician in an acute care environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficient computer skills for maintaining medication profiles and navigating pharmacy-specific automation systems.
  • Familiarity with USP and the ability to perform aseptic compounding is preferred.

Certifications and Licensure:
  • Valid and current California pharmacy technician license.
  • Current CPhT certification or the ability to obtain it within one year of employment.

Essential Duties:
  1. Deliver consistently exceptional patient care.
  2. Prepare medication orders for both inpatient and outpatient services.
  3. Utilize the computer system for dispensing and inquiry functions.
  4. Collect and deliver medications to nursing units.
  5. Answer phone calls in accordance with hospital policy, determining if the call should be directed to a pharmacist or technician.
  6. Input new drug orders and refill information into the computerized patient medication profile.
  7. Ensure accurate reconciliation of medication records and report discrepancies to a pharmacist.
  8. Receive, prepare, and distribute floor stock requisitions.
  9. Compound dosage forms for patient dispensing.
  10. Assist in maintaining adequate inventory levels in dispensing areas.
  11. Package medications under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  12. Prepare and maintain emergency medication systems.
  13. Prepare sterile products for patient administration, selecting appropriate diluents and vehicles.
  14. Prepare cytotoxic agents while adhering to aseptic and protective procedures.
  15. Plan and execute daily tasks under the direction of a pharmacist.
  16. Prepare and deliver narcotics and conduct perpetual inventories as directed.
  17. Meet quality and quantity standards for new orders and IV admixtures.
  18. Ensure compliance with hazardous waste collection and disposal protocols.
  19. Complete necessary training and competencies related to hazardous medications and aseptic techniques.
  20. Assist in maintaining emergency carts and controlled substances records.
  21. Respond to departmental needs by performing additional duties as required.
