Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Strategic Risk Manager to join our Mortgage Originations organization. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for consulting with, educating on, and supporting the execution of all first line risk programs. Your expertise will promote an environment of risk awareness and risk ownership across the business unit while adhering to the Company's Risk Appetite and Corporate Strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact within the Mortgage business unit for all risk and compliance related items, partnering with stakeholders to facilitate a collaborative approach.
  • Ensure timely identification and escalation of risks and issues, consulting with BU management and first line risk partners to ensure efficient and accurate execution of risk programs.
  • Assist in the review and enhancement of internal controls, ensuring control testing is in place and results align with the Control Standards.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of business operations, risks, controls, and related laws and regulatory guidance.
  • Support the BU's participation in relevant risk governance group meetings.
  • Provide necessary feedback and coordinate on relevant governance documents to support BU activities and manage risk.
  • Assist in preparation of materials for audits and provide support to risk partners.
  • Work with senior management to execute the implementation of effective program policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain a risk-based change management framework and strategy.
  • Collaborate on Mortgage initiatives and develop new strategies to mitigate risk across the organization's business unit.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities
  • Manage a team of 1-5 individual contributors.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of 8 years' proven project management experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Deep understanding of the Mortgage regulatory environment.
  • Experience working with loan origination software (Encompass).
  • One or more years of leadership experience.
  • Deep understanding of the mortgage industry (origination, underwriting, processing, etc.) coupled with risk/compliance/regulatory, product/project management, and/or business transformation experience.
  • Experience with mortgage risk, audit, credit risk management, process improvement/change management, remediation plans, or similar.
  • Master's degree.
  • Strong knowledge of project management methodology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly an ability to negotiate, influence, and gain consensus.
  • Regularly communicates verbally and in writing with executive management on status of initiatives, in a professional and understandable manner.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work individually as well as a member of a team.
  • Self-motivated, results-driven, and well-organized individual.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work under time constraints in support of various assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary for business partner relationships within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to build mutual trust and encourage respect; open to diverse points of view.

This is a hybrid position requiring 2 days in-office per week. Eligible candidates must live within commuting distance to one of our four offices.

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $100, $167,686.57 Annual (USD). The successful candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
