Controller Job Description

The Controller is a critical role within Civista Bank, responsible for overseeing and coordinating the bank's financial operations. This position plays a key part in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial reports, as well as the preparation of the bank's annual budget.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the Financial Operations team to ensure the smooth execution of financial tasks.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of internal, external, and regulatory financial reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Participate in the review of the bank's financial performance to inform long-term operational goals.
  • Work to protect the safety and financial soundness of the bank, participating in internal and external exams and audits.
  • Partner with all lines of business to prepare the bank and holding company operating budget and forecast.
  • Participate in executive leadership activities, including ad hoc projects as necessary.
Requirements:
  • Minimum of seven years of accounting experience, preferably in a financial institution setting.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Management, Accounting, or Finance, with a CPA designation preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of accounting standards, laws, and regulations related to the role.
  • Technical and comprehensive knowledge of all accounting areas of a bank, including an excellent understanding of GAAP specifically related to financial institutions.
  • Solid computer literacy, with accurate data entry skills and proficiency in working with spreadsheets and creating formulas.
  • A high level of initiative, thoroughness, accuracy, and organizational skills required.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills.
  • High level of confidentiality required.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
  • Work involves eye strain due to the constant use of computer screens, reading of reports, and working with spreadsheets.
  • Work involves being able to concentrate on the matter at hand, under sometimes distracting work conditions.
  • Work involves ability to communicate professionally both in person and via telephone; hear, see, accurately manipulate figures, and sit for long periods at a time.
  • Work involves lifting and moving loan files of up to 15 lbs.
  • Work involves some travel to attend meetings, training, and so forth.
