Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented undergraduate research assistant to join our Fluids Machinery Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design, testing, and analysis of marine vehicle propulsion systems, hydrodynamic vehicle control systems, and related applications.

  • Support the development of optimization methods for constrained multi-dimensional fluid/structure design problems.

  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of novel technology concepts.

  • Collaborate with other engineers, researchers, and academic faculty to achieve project goals.

  • Assist in the design, assembly, and operation of complex test articles and experiments at ARL water tunnel facilities and government test facilities.

Requirements

  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.

  • Familiarity with MATLAB and basic proficiency preferred.

  • Ability to work independently on technical problems and seek out resources or learning needed to solve challenges.

  • Ability to present technical information to professionals with varying technical backgrounds.

  • US citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to compiled computer languages (FORTRAN, C, etc.).

  • Familiarity with solid modelling/CAD systems.

  • Interest in computer science and applied math related topics such as machine learning, numerical methods, and optimization.

  • Experience with hands-on experimentation and testing.

  • Interest in applied research or future graduate school.

  • Ability to obtain a US Government security clearance.
