STRUCTURAL CONCRETE ENGINEER
POSITION OVERVIEW
As a Structural Concrete Engineer, you will be responsible for reviewing project submissions, managing Requests for Information (RFIs), and processing modifications related to concrete works. Your role includes preparing and maintaining agendas and minutes for meetings, overseeing construction drawings, assisting with pricing for change orders, and providing marketing support as needed. You will work closely with the Concrete Project Manager and Superintendent to manage subcontractor relationships and project scheduling, ensuring quality control and layout accuracy. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, along with experience in web-based construction management tools such as Procore, is essential.
ABOUT OKLAND CONSTRUCTION
Established in 1918, Okland Construction is a prominent regional general contracting and construction management firm with a workforce nearing 1,000 employees. We oversee all aspects of architectural, engineering, bidding, contracting, construction, and inspection processes from inception to completion, specializing in large-scale commercial concrete projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilize and maintain the company’s standard project management software, Procore, and associated documentation.
- Stay updated on concrete construction drawings and as-built documents.
- Monitor submittals, RFIs, project modifications, and work progress, particularly items that may lead to project delays or errors if not executed correctly.
- Conduct site visits prior to concrete work commencement, documenting conditions through video recordings.
- Maintain electronic project files as directed by the Concrete Project Manager.
- Provide current copies of drawings and specifications to subcontractors.
- Assist in Quality Assurance/Quality Control by verifying that all materials installed match approved submittals.
- Participate in relevant meetings, including project kick-off, weekly updates, and monthly reviews.
- Document construction activities and maintain comprehensive records through written reports and photographs.
- File inspection reports and test results appropriately.
- Collaborate with the project team to uphold safety standards and ensure a secure working environment.
- Manage RFIs and Change Documents:
- Receive and generate RFIs based on field issues or discrepancies, collaborating with the project team and design professionals.
- Distribute RFI responses to relevant subcontractors and track associated cost impacts.
- Update construction drawings with changes and maintain an RFI log for discussion in weekly meetings.
- Handle Submittals:
- Create and manage a submittal schedule based on specification reviews.
- Evaluate submittals for compliance with project documents and communicate findings to architects.
- Maintain organized records of all submittals for reference throughout the project lifecycle.
- Oversee procurement items and their status in collaboration with the superintendent.
- Submit operations and maintenance manuals and other necessary documents for project close-out.
- Process Change Orders:
- Request proposals for contract changes from subcontractors, review with the project team, and distribute accordingly.
- Compile and review pricing for change orders, maintaining a log of all related documents.
- Provide quantity take-offs for self-performed concrete activities.
- Update construction drawings with approved modifications.
- Maintain Meeting Documentation:
- Develop and regularly update meeting agendas in collaboration with the project team.
- Record and distribute meeting notes after review by the project manager or superintendent.
- Ensure consistent attendance and punctuality in fulfilling job responsibilities.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Promote the company to clients and the architectural team, engaging the Business Development Department for future opportunities.
- Assist the project manager in monitoring job cost reports to ensure accurate quantity entries and cost projections.
- Understand project scheduling logic and collaborate with the team to meet detailed construction timelines.
- Support the project team in managing subcontract agreements and purchase orders.
- Conduct inspections for SWPP and LEED, if certified and assigned.
- Provide safety orientations for subcontractors and Okland employees as required.
- Assist with the preparation and review of monthly pay applications as needed.
- Support project bids and solicitations as requested.
- Bachelor's degree or 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in commercial construction projects, or a combination of education and experience related to self-perform concrete work.
- In-depth knowledge of construction practices with a focus on concrete technologies and applications.
- Familiarity with maintenance practices and applicable building codes.
- Proficient in construction tools and techniques, with strong skills in scheduling and cost control.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills for effective interaction with various stakeholders.
- Ability to interpret complex instructions and construction documents.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and document editing software.
