About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Custodial Services Specialist to join our team at Portland Public Schools. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the cleanliness and safety of our schools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Cleaning and Maintenance: Collaborate with your team to ensure the building is clean and well-maintained, including dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing floors, washing windows, cleaning sumps, vacuuming, and emptying waste baskets/garbage cans.
  • Room Prioritization: Prioritize the cleaning of different types of rooms, including restrooms, kitchens, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other areas.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure the building is well-maintained by changing lights, performing minor maintenance, and completing other general custodial duties.
  • Event Support: Work with school staff to set up the building for after-school activities, special events, and meetings.
  • Special Projects: Assist staff with special projects, such as moving heavy or bulky items.
  • Emergency Response: Be available to respond to after-hours emergency assistance to the building if needed.
  • Equity Initiatives: Collaborate with the team on building-wide equity initiatives that promote the PPS mission.
Requirements
  • Communication Skills: Ability to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Direction and Judgment: Ability to understand and carry out written and oral directions, ask questions, and seek the direction or assistance of the head Custodian.
  • Customer Service: Ability to work successfully with diverse employees and perform consistently with a customer service model.
  • Mechanical Skills: Ability to learn and operate boilers, heating and ventilation systems, and simple maintenance equipment.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to bend, stoop, twist, walk, carry, and lift for eight hours per day, with a physical condition sufficient to maintain a rigorous work schedule requiring continuous physical exertion and heavy lifting.
