Position Title: Education Support Specialist
Overall Responsibility:
Under the guidance of the Director of Education and Family Support, the Education Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting parents, caregivers, and families of individuals with disabilities. This position focuses on helping them navigate various systems of care, including educational, healthcare, and training opportunities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Enhance the knowledge and skills of parents, families, providers, and educators to improve early learning, school-aged, and post-secondary outcomes for children.
- Provide individualized support and problem-solving assistance, either via phone or in-person, regarding Individualized Family Service Plans (IFSP), Individualized Education Programs (IEP), and disability-related issues.
- Deliver culturally sensitive information and resource referrals, screening cases to identify those needing more intensive support.
- Understand and explain the legal regulations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to parents, families, and professionals.
- Attend educational meetings at the request of families to empower them in their advocacy efforts.
- Stay informed about state and federal special education laws and policies affecting education.
- Respond to inquiries from parents of children with disabilities or special healthcare needs, educating them on IDEA: Part C and Part B, ADA 504 Plans, and referring them to appropriate community resources.
- Act as an advocate and support system when challenges arise within the care system.
- Assist in creating training materials that are culturally and linguistically appropriate, ensuring they are accessible and understandable for families.
- Facilitate parent-to-parent support referrals when suitable.
- Maintain accurate documentation in the database and provide monthly reports as needed.
- Foster collaborative relationships with other staff members to achieve the organization's mission.
- Participate in all staff meetings, including weekly case discussions.
- Support the Family Information Center and respond to calls as required.
- Perform additional duties as necessary.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Early Childhood, Social Work; Master's degree preferred.
- Creative, self-motivated, and capable of working independently.
- Experience and knowledge in special education, including Part C and/or Part B.
- Familiarity with community resources.
- Strong administrative, leadership, written, and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, maintain attention to detail, and uphold confidentiality.
- Proficient in maintaining accurate records and managing required data.
- Demonstrated computer skills, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite, including the ability to develop training materials and presentations.
- Possession of a personal vehicle for travel.
- Parents of children with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
