Position Summary

Our operations include two active tailings facilities, managing the deposition of approximately 56,000 tonnes of tailings daily, alongside three legacy sites. Effective management of tailings and water is crucial to our success as a long-term copper producer, and we rely on a skilled tailings engineering team. The Senior Tailings Engineer will collaborate closely with the Tailings Superintendent, the Responsible Tailings Facility Engineer, the Engineer of Record, and various consultants to uphold the highest standards in tailings design, operation, and closure, in accordance with our Tailings Management System and relevant industry regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the implementation of our Tailings Management System and adhere to industry best practices for all active and inactive tailings storage facilities.
  • Conduct technical reviews of all work performed by the Engineer of Record or other consultants regarding tailings management.
  • Coordinate and engage in internal and external inspections of tailings storage facilities, ensuring compliance with recommendations from oversight bodies.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators, collaborating with the Tailings Superintendent to devise action plans for issue resolution.
  • Assist in the planning and interpretation of monitoring and instrumentation, ensuring quality assurance and safe practices in tailings management.
  • Develop plans for tailings deposition and water management in partnership with the Tailings Superintendent.
  • Create scopes of work based on operational needs.
  • Work alongside the Tailings Superintendent to prepare short and long-term forecasts and budgets for engineering projects.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide training to operations personnel on tailings management topics.
  • Ensure compliance of all consultants, contractors, and vendors with established procedures.
  • Plan work in alignment with tailings storage facility construction strategies, utilizing survey and design tools.
  • Contribute to the development of the Tailings department and long-term planning initiatives.
  • Assign resources and create work schedules for tailings storage facility construction, conducting daily checks for adherence to design and quality standards.
  • Participate in and document project planning and scheduling meetings on a weekly, monthly, and long-term basis.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing standard operating procedures and safe work instructions.
  • Support initiatives aimed at optimizing existing systems, processes, and equipment to enhance overall performance.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of experience in tailings management or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to review and compose technical reports and presentations.
  • Excellent time management capabilities.
  • In-depth knowledge of tailings storage facility design, construction, operation, maintenance, and monitoring.
  • Familiarity with soil mechanics, slope stability analysis, and general geotechnical and civil engineering principles.
  • Understanding of monitoring and survey equipment, procedures, and principles.

Technical Proficiencies:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Muk3D or similar tailings management software is advantageous.

Educational Background:

Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering or a related field is required. Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification is preferred.
