Position Overview
This role entails overseeing assignments related to Nuclear Engineering within the Natrium initiative. The Nuclear Division on Natrium is tasked with the design of systems for processing radioactive waste, as well as conducting assessments for shielding and radiation exposure. The individual in this position will hold technical accountability for interpreting, organizing, and executing assignments within the nuclear engineering domain. This includes delving into the subject matter (system design and/or radiation evaluations), defining the scope of tasks, and potentially developing innovative concepts, methodologies, and solutions. Furthermore, this role will require collaboration and coordination with other engineering disciplines and teaming partners throughout the design development process. The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in nuclear engineering and be adept at creating design documentation that aligns with relevant standards. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for promoting our leadership, quality, and safety values to external stakeholders, including vendors and subcontractors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adhere to discipline work processes and ensure technical compliance with company, contractual, and industry standards.
- Develop and review technical reports, design documentation, and calculations utilizing engineering software.
- Ensure the delivery of error-free outputs.
- Collaborate in an inclusive team environment where all members are encouraged to contribute fully.
- Achieve meaningful objectives in partnership with the team.
- Establish and adhere to plans to meet schedules and fulfill stakeholder requirements.
- Provide insights for budget and schedule estimates.
- Contribute to the cost-effective design of the entire facility.
- Guarantee adherence to engineering processes and safety standards through detailed design.
- Identify significant technical uncertainties and present solution alternatives for management consideration.
- Deliver analyses and solutions for engineering challenges, interpreting drawings, verbal instructions, and applicable codes relevant to project specifications, and effectively articulating explanations.
- Ensure compliance with nuclear and mechanical standards, conducting quality checks for the nuclear engineering team’s work.
- Develop design calculations and drawings for radioactive waste systems, including equipment sizing calculations, specifications, and technical evaluations from vendors.
- Conduct calculations for plant systems and equipment, which may encompass shielding and dose assessments or thermal hydraulic evaluations for specific components.
- Perform additional related tasks as assigned by the Engineering Group Supervisor.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Level 1: Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited institution, with progressive relevant experience (5-8 years + BS).
- Level 2: Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited institution, with progressive relevant experience (8-10 years + BS).
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic Qualifications:
- Must have authorization to live and work in the US without sponsorship.
- Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background investigation.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Relevant experience in nuclear design.
- Proven experience in the design of nuclear plant systems (power generation or DOE nuclear facilities) or other industrial systems.
- U.S. Professional Engineering License in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (or the ability to obtain within 12 months).
- Familiarity with industry and regulatory guidelines, codes, and standards, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office and other engineering software (e.g., GOTHIC, CONTEMPT, RELAP, HEATING6, MCNP, Microshield).
- Extensive knowledge of nuclear engineering processes, procedures, and specifications.
- Exceptional oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Bechtel Corporate guidelines and standards. Experience as a lead or responsible engineer on large-scale projects. Previous experience with Bechtel and/or government projects.
