Position Overview

DEPUTY SHERIFF

Salary Range: $68,000 - $79,000

Work Environment: Onsite

This role is exclusively for individuals with Virginia Law Enforcement Certification.

The City of Falls Church Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated full-time Deputy Sheriff who holds a valid Virginia DCJS certification. The successful candidate will be responsible for a variety of duties including court security, the transportation of detainees, the execution of civil processes, and other law enforcement responsibilities within a dynamic and compact jurisdiction.

Falls Church is an independent city, covering 2.2 square miles with a population of approximately 15,000, located just six miles from the nation's capital. It boasts its own court system, clerk's office, and sheriff's department, all while being known for its vibrant community, exceptional customer service, and highly regarded educational institutions.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Completion of thorough background checks, including past employment and fingerprint criminal history. The Sheriff's Office reserves the right to disqualify any applicant based on the findings of this investigation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or in the process of obtaining U.S. citizenship.
  • Minimum age of 21 at the time of hire.
  • Possession of a valid U.S. state driver's license.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Non-user of tobacco products, including vaping.
  • Vision corrected to 20/20, with clear near and night vision, as well as passing peripheral vision tests.
  • Excellent physical fitness and successful completion of a medical examination.
  • Ability to remain standing for extended periods, including in adverse weather conditions, and to operate agency vehicles for prolonged durations.
  • Capability to engage in apprehension and enforce criminal and traffic laws.
  • Preference will be given to qualified veterans.

Disqualifying Factors (Partial List):

  • Any arrests, pleas, or convictions at any age for any offense, including misdemeanors, may result in disqualification.
  • Convictions or guilty pleas to felonies or offenses that would be classified as felonies in Virginia.
  • Class 1 or 2 misdemeanors committed as an adult, including DUI offenses.
  • Positive results on any pre-employment drug screening.
  • More than one moving violation within the past 12 months or two within the last 24 months prior to application.
  • Any actions or circumstances deemed unacceptable for law enforcement and public safety.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position, generally scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM, with required overtime for special events and specific assignments.

Compensation and Benefits:

The starting salary for qualified Deputy Sheriffs ranges from $68,000 to $79,000 annually, with potential increases based on experience and qualifications.
