Job Summary

The Shelly Company, a leading provider of aggregates, asphalt, and paving services, is seeking a skilled Asphalt Plant Operator to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of our HMA batch or drum plant.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the plant foreperson with daily operations and upkeep of the plant.
  • Inspect and perform maintenance on plant parts, including:
    • Accessing the bottom and upper baghouse to inspect and change bags.
    • Inspecting, maintaining, and replacing dryer flights.
    • Cleaning the burner tip and nozzle.
    • Performing other maintenance-related duties as required by supervisors.
  • Maintain and operate front-end loaders.
  • Access all areas of the plant to perform necessary maintenance and repairs.
  • Knowledge of all applicable regulations affecting asphalt plant production, safety, environmental, state, federal, and company policies.
  • Ensure observance of such regulations and compliance with all regulations and permit conditions.
  • Competent with computers and have a thorough knowledge of window-based programs.
  • Perform welding, fabrication, and electrical duties as required.
  • Detect safety hazards and malfunctions and respond accordingly.
  • Follow directions.
  • Accurately complete daily paperwork, including plant production reports, material produced, and sales reports, and nightly deposits from cash customers.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid conditions, airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold.

The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud and may require protective equipment.
