About the Role

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in psychiatric epidemiology, available immediately. The position is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

The successful candidate will contribute to a research program on suicidal thoughts and behaviors, focusing on genetically informative approaches. This research program is funded through the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and utilizes multiple datasets to address questions related to the general and genetic epidemiology of suicidality, particularly in the context of substance use disorders.

Opportunities are available for travel to conferences and workshops to further develop analytical skills.

The School of Medicine at VCU is an equal opportunity, affirmative action university providing access to education and employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, political affiliation, veteran status, genetic information, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or disability.

The position will remain open until filled.

Key Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include:
- Developing research questions consistent with the specific aims of funded R01
- Executing analyses independently and in collaboration with other research team members
- Documenting all analytic procedures through open science applications
- Preparing and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed academic journals
- Contributing as a co-author to manuscripts led by other research team members
- Presenting findings at professional conferences

Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD and proven skills and experience in psychiatric epidemiology, behavioral genetics, psychology, or a related field. Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Quantitative analytic skills, preferably within the context of R, are also required. The applicant must have demonstrated skills in designing and executing research aims related to psychiatric, substance use, or behavioral outcomes. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well both independently and in collaborative environments are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with large-scale databases, particularly in the context of population-based studies on behavior, such as Add Health and ABCD, or registry data, is preferred. Experience with survival models, structural equation models, and genetic analytic methods (genomewide association studies, polygenic scores) is also preferred. A history of peer-reviewed publications and experience interpreting findings in a developmental context are preferred.

The School of Medicine at VCU continuously strives to create a workplace and learning environment that reflects the demographic and social milieu of the communities it serves. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
