Job Summary for the Nuclear Medicine Specialist
The Nuclear Medicine Specialist provides essential services utilizing radionuclides to aid in the diagnosis or treatment of medical conditions. The specialist demonstrates a thorough understanding of human anatomy, patient care, positioning, nuclear medicine principles, radiation safety, and specialized techniques. Imaging is conducted in accordance with ARRT and CNMT standards.

The specialist will perform procedures and quality control tests following the guidelines established by the Bureau of Radiation Control and St. David's policies. Professional judgment and conduct must align with the ARRT Code of Ethics and the values of St. David's Healthcare.

Responsibilities of the Nuclear Medicine Specialist

  • Conduct Nuclear Medicine examinations according to established medical imaging protocols.
  • Administer prescribed pharmaceutical-grade radioactive materials to patients in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Implement appropriate safety measures for radioactive materials for self, staff, and patients.
  • Explain procedures to patients prior to examinations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with Nuclear Medicine equipment, including Spect Cameras and PACS.
  • Ensure physician availability for procedures requiring medication administration and supervision.
  • Perform necessary duties to maintain departmental functions, including quality control checks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation regarding radioactive materials.
  • Conduct surveys and document findings in work areas and storage facilities.
  • Adhere to policies regarding Standard Precautions, Infection Control, and Radiation Safety.
  • Collaborate with the Radiation Safety Officer to uphold quality control and assurance standards.

Qualifications for the Nuclear Medicine Specialist

Education:
Graduation from an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program or equivalent.

Experience:
Preferred one year of experience as a Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

Licensure/Certification Required:
Certification or Temporary Certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a Medical Radiologic Technologist. Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (CNMTB) or eligibility to take the CNMT or ARRT (N) examinations within 24 months. Basic Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
