Job Summary

Michigan Technological University seeks a highly skilled Electrical Engineer to administer the campus electrical power distribution system, ensuring compliance with NEC and MIOSHA regulations. The successful candidate will coordinate changes to the overall campus electrical system, work with outside consultants, and develop long-term plans to make the campus electrical system more sustainable and efficient.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administer the campus electrical power distribution system, including high and low voltage.
  • Verify compliance with system safety requirements per NEC and MIOSHA.
  • Coordinate changes to the overall campus electrical system as necessary due to various construction and/or renovation projects.
  • Work with the Director of Planning & Construction Services, the Director of Energy Management, and others on campus to develop and implement long-term plans to make the campus electrical system more sustainable and efficient.
  • Administer electrical design contracts, supervise the activities of outside electrical engineers, testing service contractors, and other special services contractors required to successfully complete University projects.
  • Manage planning, engineering, scheduling, and construction of various projects as assigned in the capacity of project manager.
  • Develop a long-term familiarity and expertise with the campus electrical system and with the long-term needs of the building and campus users.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Licensed PE in Michigan or another State in the United States.
  • Five years or more of experience in the design and construction of electrical systems involving new buildings, renovations, and system upgrades.
  • Demonstrated experience performing Inspection and quality control for electrical construction projects.
  • Construction contract management experience.
  • Budget and cost estimating experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the design and construction of high voltage electrical distribution systems for campus or municipal electrical systems.
  • Design and/or construction of alternate energy systems such as solar or wind power.
  • Experience working in Facilities Management for a higher education institution.
  • Experience overseeing and/or coordinating major building maintenance projects.
  • Experience designing and/or analyzing various low voltage data, communication, security, and other systems.
Working Conditions

The employee is occasionally required to stand, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, reach with hands and arms, and taste or smell. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear, and use hands to finger or feel and object. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and color vision, and the ability to focus. The noise level in the work environment is occasionally very loud.

Required Training and Other Conditions of Employment

Required Departmental Training: Monthly assigned job-specific training modules.
