Position Overview:

The Phlebotomy Training Specialist is responsible for the orientation and education of phlebotomy personnel, ensuring that team members can demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of blood collection and relevant point-of-care testing. This role includes training and certifying staff in the collection of drug screenings and breath alcohol tests, adhering to the Department of Transportation's chain of custody protocols. The specialist will utilize appropriate methods to evaluate the skill levels of phlebotomy team members and maintain accurate training and competency documentation in compliance with regulatory standards. Additionally, this position will assist the Phlebotomy Supervisor with budget planning, compliance with productivity benchmarks, payroll and attendance management, coworker scheduling, and other supervisory duties. When necessary, the specialist will act as the phlebotomy coordinator, distributing workloads and organizing breaks.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Minimum of an Associate's Degree in a science-related discipline.
  • Experience: A minimum of five years in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Certifications: Must hold registration as a Phlebotomist from a recognized national certifying body.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective organizational skills. Must thrive under pressure and be capable of working both independently and collaboratively. Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines is essential. Physical capability to navigate the hospital and campus is required. Proficiency in computer usage, along with excellent organizational and customer service skills, is also necessary.
  • Preferred Experience: Experience in a phlebotomy coordinator role or supervisory capacity is advantageous.
  • Preferred Certifications: Certification as a trainer for the collection of Department of Transportation Drug Screens is preferred.
