About Us

Skjodt-Barrett Foods is a premier provider of food solutions and tailored ingredients for some of North America's most cherished and reputable brands. We pride ourselves on collaborating closely with our clients to grasp their distinct requirements and develop inventive, personalized solutions that bring delight to their consumers.

Founded over 35 years ago by a family, we are supported by Axel Johnson Inc (AJI), an investment firm that empowers us to pursue growth and explore new avenues.

Our clientele, ranging from renowned international brands to mid-sized manufacturers, is the reason for our existence. Our teams of innovators, communicators, and managers are dedicated to fulfilling their needs, establishing trust, and surpassing expectations.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Quality Assurance Lead, Food Production to oversee a team of quality assurance experts at our facility in Indiana. Reporting directly to the Head of Quality Assurance, you will enhance and refine the plant's quality management system while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and compliance. Your leadership will guide the team in executing their daily quality assurance responsibilities and in developing and implementing quality objectives for the facility. You will ensure that all products manufactured meet safety and quality specifications.

Candidate Profile

You are an experienced quality assurance manager with a background in food and beverage manufacturing. You are driven by integrity, a commitment to excellence, and a passion for continuous improvement on the production floor. You are eager to implement change and are dedicated to making it a reality. You are analytical and process-oriented, while also valuing hands-on engagement on the production floor to assess team performance and operational processes.

What We Offer

Influence and Autonomy. You will play a crucial role in sustaining our status as a leading manufacturer of intricate food ingredients and products for globally recognized brands. At Skjodt-Barrett Foods, we appreciate the initiative to bring your ideas to fruition and the resilience to be accountable for your actions. You will have the opportunity to foster team cohesion while managing knowledge sharing and the adoption of changes.

Significant Impact. You will be an essential part of our "One Plant" initiative, which integrates the operations of our facilities in Indiana and Ontario, Canada. You will have the chance to influence quality assurance, change management, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Career Advancement. You will collaborate with a team that prioritizes an innovative and cooperative environment, valuing diverse perspectives and engaging in constructive discussions to reach satisfactory outcomes. Whether you aspire to advance within quality assurance or transition to another area of plant operations, you will receive support for your professional development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster a Quality Culture. You will advocate for the belief that quality is a collective responsibility. You will take charge of the overall success of quality assurance standards and practices while guiding the team to take ownership of their actions. You will ensure compliance with all regulatory standards, including Site HACCP, GFIS, and company protocols as outlined in the Quality Assurance Manual and internal directives. You will spearhead continuous improvement initiatives in product quality, performance, and process optimization.
  • Guarantee Product Safety. You will oversee daily quality assurance operations within the plant. You will apply logical reasoning to resolve issues and implement solutions to prevent production delays. You will ensure that the team adheres to stringent sanitation protocols and conducts thorough sanitation testing. You will support troubleshooting efforts in the event of sanitation system failures.
  • Analyze and Report. You will address customer complaints and provide Root Cause Analysis and Corrective Action Preventative Action (CAPA). You will manage audits and inspections from local, state, customer, third-party, and federal entities. You will communicate quality metrics and inspection outcomes to relevant managers and leadership, including daily, weekly, or monthly KPI reporting.
  • Knowledge Sharing. You will educate management and staff on all quality assurance and food safety standards, including the Site HACCP program, Quality Management System (QMS), and other prerequisite programs. You will develop and maintain documentation for all required quality tests and activities.
  • Oversee Laboratory Operations. You will ensure the availability of all necessary supplies and equipment. You will verify that appropriate tests—chemical, bacteriological, sensory, and utilization—are conducted on raw materials and finished products.
  • Exceed Customer Expectations. You will ensure compliance with all contract packaging and customer requirements. You will guarantee timely release of all finished goods for shipment and materials for production.
  • Lead Change Management. You will implement change management strategies that promote quicker adoption of improvements and best practices, enhancing quality and efficiency. You will collaborate closely with the plant manager, engineers, production manager, HRBP, controller, and planner to achieve site objectives related to cost, quality, environmental safety, and delivering the best possible product to our customers.

Qualifications:

  • Education. You possess a Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field. You have completed HACCP training and GFSI scheme training.
  • Experience. You have extensive experience in quality assurance within the food and beverage manufacturing sector. You have successfully implemented continuous improvement initiatives and led the resulting change management to engage employees and ensure adoption. You have experience with CAPA and have led audits with customers on-site, implementing corrective actions as necessary.
  • Technical Knowledge. You have a deep understanding of overseeing and optimizing a Quality Management System (QMS) under GFSI and HACCP standards. You are knowledgeable in thermal processing techniques, including hot fill, sterilization, or aseptic processing within the food and beverage manufacturing industry. You have a comprehensive understanding of sanitation systems, techniques, and procedures, as well as pasteurization processes. You are familiar with FDA requirements for acidified and acid foods.
  • Project Management Skills. You are proactive and capable of managing projects from inception to completion. You are decisive, detail-oriented, and responsive to issues and requests for changes. You possess the initiative to take action and can effectively guide project teams to deliver complex, cross-functional projects. You exhibit excellent organizational skills in a dynamic environment.
  • Leadership Abilities. You have a track record of managing and developing a team throughout their tenure, guiding their work to achieve objectives efficiently and safely. You can influence without authority and collaborate effectively with teams, managers, and executives. You are highly cooperative and genuinely interested in understanding others, resolving conflicts, and promoting high-quality outcomes.
  • Accountability. You possess a creative mindset and an analytical approach to problem-solving, task management, and time management. You can work alongside managers and production staff to gain a comprehensive understanding of the production floor. You can identify gaps and areas for increased efficiency, developing and implementing changes and best practices to ensure adoption. You work with urgency and enthusiasm, thrive in a dynamic environment, and embrace daily challenges. You are confident in presenting new ideas and constructively challenging the status quo, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience, demonstrating business value and impact.
