SUMMARY: The role of an ESY Speech-Language Specialist is designed to deliver direct language therapy to students experiencing communication challenges. This position focuses on creating and executing tailored treatment plans to enhance student success and promote effective communication skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are indicative of the work performed in this role and are not an exhaustive list. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
- Evaluates students' communication abilities (e.g., articulation, fluency, voice, expressive and receptive language) to identify suitable language intervention strategies.
- Collaborates with various stakeholders (e.g., parents, educators, healthcare professionals, administration) to share information, address concerns, and provide services in accordance with established protocols.
- Implements language intervention strategies and educational resources to mitigate the effects of communication disorders while adhering to regulatory standards.
- Guides assigned support personnel to ensure understanding of communicative disorders, the use of assistive technologies, and the execution of prescribed treatment plans.
- Teaches eligible students to utilize appropriate communication devices (e.g., hearing aids, FM systems, augmentative communication tools) to reduce the educational impact of communication disorders.
- Interprets medical documentation relevant to the Speech-Language Specialist's expertise to ensure treatment plans are suitable.
- Maintains a variety of manual and electronic records (e.g., progress reports, activity logs, treatment plans) to ensure compliance and facilitate tracking of student progress.
- Supervises students and/or paraprofessionals to provide guidance and ensure focus on educational outcomes.
- Prepares documentation (e.g., activity logs, correspondence, treatment plans) to record activities and convey necessary information.
- Delivers speech and language therapy to students to prevent skill regression and support their academic success.
- Researches various topics related to intervention techniques and resources to determine the best approaches for meeting students' needs during the ESY.
- Responds to inquiries from various parties (e.g., parents, educators, students) to provide information and appropriate referrals.
- Conducts summer speech assessments as required.
Qualifications:
- Certified Speech-Language Pathologist
- 3-5 years of experience in speech-language pathology preferred
- Strong understanding of special education laws and procedures
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively
