The Clinical Dietitian plays a vital role in supporting individuals living with HIV by providing comprehensive nutritional services under the guidance of the Nurse Supervisor. The responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing nutrition care and counseling strategies through the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) for patients receiving treatment at the Division of HIV Medicine (DHIVM). This encompasses a range of conditions such as newly diagnosed HIV+, hospital follow-ups, wasting syndrome, lipodystrophy, diabetes, renal failure, pregnancy, obesity, cancer, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, anemias, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, among others.
  • Conducting thorough nutritional evaluations in line with the NCP and collaborating with patients to create personalized nutrition care plans.
Initial assessments for all new patients

Annual evaluations

Additional assessments as requested by medical staff or patients

Reassessments as necessary.

  • Employing motivational interviewing techniques to encourage patients towards achieving their health goals.
  • Delivering nutrition education and counseling tailored to each patient's NCP.
  • Providing resources to support healthy eating on a limited budget.
  • Administering Medical Nutrition Therapy as requested by healthcare providers or recommended by the Registered Dietitian.
  • Engaging and re-engaging patients in nutrition services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Following up within 1-2 weeks post-assessment to reinforce objectives and address any challenges faced by patients.
  • Maintaining a caseload of patients receiving nutrition services, ensuring regular contact.
Coordination of Nutrition Supplementation Needs:
  • Conducting initial assessments, six-month screenings, and annual reassessments to evaluate the necessity and appropriateness of nutritional supplements.
  • Securing prior authorization for Medicaid participants.
  • Obtaining prescriptions from healthcare providers.
  • Coordinating with pharmacies to ensure patients receive their supplements.
  • Resolving any issues that may arise between patients, pharmacies, and insurance plans.
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team and participating in case conferences as required.
  • Documenting nutritional encounters in the appropriate systems.
  • Supervising dietetic students when necessary.
  • Coordinating with external nutrition programs for patients at AMC DHIVM.
  • Completing nutrition assessments as needed.
  • Facilitating referrals as necessary.
  • Ensuring assessments are sent to community nutrition providers upon receiving formal patient authorization.
  • Participating in eligibility determination and recertification processes.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:


A Bachelor's degree in nutrition or a related field is required, with a Master's degree preferred. Candidates must be a Registered Dietitian with the ADA and possess 1 to 3 years of documented experience in providing outpatient nutrition services to medically compromised populations.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Proficiency in reading and comprehending medical information is essential, along with a solid understanding of medical terminology. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, and knowledge of Spanish is advantageous. The ability to respond to routine inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or community members is also necessary.
