We are looking for an energetic educator with culinary skills or a culinary professional with teaching experience to join us as a part-time/per diem Culinary Education Specialist. This role involves leading interactive cooking sessions and nutrition workshops for students from PreK to 8th grade, their parents, and educators in various community settings. Our Culinary Education Specialists serve as ambassadors for our mission, fostering connections with educational institutions, families, and volunteers.
Our programming includes fundamental nutrition education, featuring hands-on recipe demonstrations and tastings that highlight fresh, nutritious ingredients while promoting healthy cooking and eating practices.
This is a flexible part-time position, typically requiring 5-10 hours of work per week during active class sessions. Availability for some evenings and weekends may be necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Complete training on our educational framework, policies, and administrative tasks.
- Instruct children and adults in culinary techniques and nutrition fundamentals, both virtually and in-person.
- Collaborate with partner organization staff and internal team members.
- Adhere to the established curriculum, manage grocery procurement, conduct recipe demonstrations, and submit necessary documentation.
- Administer pre- and post-program surveys to participants and handle related paperwork.
Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of nutrition is essential.
- Must possess a valid food service sanitation certification or obtain it within the initial 90 days of employment.
- Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver's license is required.
- Conversational fluency in English and Spanish is mandatory.
- Culinary training and/or experience in the food industry is preferred.
- Experience in teaching or working with children is advantageous.
- Instructors may be required to conduct virtual classes and must have adequate technology, including reliable internet, a computer or tablet, video camera, and audio equipment.
- Experience working with diverse cultural groups is a plus.
- Dependability and punctuality are crucial, along with proactive communication regarding any needs or issues.
- Flexibility in scheduling and a positive, adaptable attitude are important.
- A commitment to the mission and values of our organization is essential.
This position is funded through grants.
Compensation for teaching classes ranges from $75 to $150 per session, while administrative tasks (such as training and meetings) are compensated at $20 per hour.
Culinary Education Specialists are employees of our organization and are eligible for paid sick leave.
