Job Overview:
The role involves assisting in the compassionate care of laboratory animals, ensuring their well-being in a safe and hygienic environment. Responsibilities include cage maintenance, sanitation, and the preparation of animal research facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Cage Maintenance:
- Prepare soiled cages for cleaning.
- Operate washing machinery and ensure it is functioning correctly during routine operations and maintenance.
- Utilize autoclaves for sterilizing caging equipment.
- Conduct daily quality control assessments and document the effectiveness of cleaning procedures.
- Assemble and distribute sanitized cages as per supply requirements.
- Maintain cleanliness in cage washing areas and related spaces.
- Dispose of waste and manage trash effectively.
- Transport cages and supplies between animal care and washing areas.
Animal Husbandry:
- Provide daily care, including feeding and hydration, for various species.
- Change and sanitize animal enclosures as per schedule.
- Implement enrichment programs tailored to each species.
- Sanitize facilities, equipment, and passageways as required.
- Accurately document daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.
- Monitor animal behavior for signs of illness and report findings to veterinary staff.
- Receive, transport, and allocate incoming animals as instructed.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping for cage cards and animal census.
- Provide specialized care for animals in quarantine or biohazard conditions.
- Verify that equipment in animal rooms is operational.
Combined Responsibilities:
- Adhere to internal controls and reporting protocols.
- Participate in training programs to enhance knowledge in laboratory animal science.
- Deliver exceptional customer service while following safety protocols and using appropriate protective gear.
- Comply with regulations governing laboratory animal care and assist with logistics as needed.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned.
Equipment Utilized:
- Industrial cage and rack washers, autoclaves, pallet jacks, and animal housing units.
- Support equipment for a multi-species laboratory animal facility and standard office tools.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
Work Environment:
- Standard research facility setting.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
- Frequent exposure to animal allergens, odors, and cleaning chemicals.
- Potential contact with zoonotic diseases and hazardous materials.
- Possible exposure to radiation and biohazards.
