Laboratory Animal Caregiver

Job Overview:
The role involves assisting in the compassionate care of laboratory animals, ensuring their safety and well-being in a clean and sanitary environment. Responsibilities include tasks related to cage sanitation, maintenance, and preparation of facilities for animal research.
Key Responsibilities:
Cage Sanitation:
- Prepares used cages for cleaning.
- Operates washing machinery, ensuring it functions correctly during daily operations, routine cleaning, and preventive upkeep.
- Utilizes autoclave equipment for sterilizing or decontaminating cages.
- Conducts daily quality assurance checks and records the effectiveness of cleaning procedures.
- Assembles and distributes sanitized cages according to inventory requests.
- Maintains cleanliness in cage washing areas and related spaces, including hallways and storage.
- Disposes of waste and refuse appropriately.
- Transports cages and supplies between animal housing and washing areas.
Animal Husbandry:
- Provides daily care, including feeding and hydration, for various species.
- Changes and sanitizes animal housing as per schedule.
- Implements enrichment programs tailored to each species.
- Sanitizes facilities, equipment, and corridors as required.
- Accurately documents daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.
- Monitors animal behavior for signs of illness and alerts veterinary personnel as necessary.
- Receives, transports, and distributes incoming animals as instructed.
- Ensures proper labeling and census of animal housing.
- Provides specialized care for animals in quarantine, biohazard, and sterile environments.
- Ensures that equipment in animal housing is functioning correctly.
Cage Sanitation and Animal Care:
- Follows internal protocols and reporting structures.
- Participates in training programs to enhance knowledge in laboratory animal science.
- Delivers exceptional customer service while adhering to safety protocols and wearing appropriate protective gear.
- Complies with regulations governing laboratory animal care and may assist with logistics related to the transport of cages or materials and the receipt and storage of supplies.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Equipment Utilized:
- Industrial cage and rack washers, autoclaves, pallet jacks, and animal housing.
- Support equipment used in a multi-species laboratory animal facility and standard office tools.
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience.
Work Environment:
- Standard research facility setting.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime as required.
- Frequent exposure to animal allergens, including hair and dander.
- Regular exposure to animal odors, heat, and humidity from washing areas, as well as cleaning chemicals.
- Potential contact with zoonotic diseases and hazardous research materials.
- Possible exposure to radiation and biohazards.
