Position Summary

The City of Birmingham (EOE) is looking for qualified candidates for the role of Seasonal Public Works Inspector for the upcoming construction season.

Under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Engineering, this seasonal role involves the inspection of roadways, sidewalks, and underground utility construction projects. Responsibilities include the preparation and documentation of engineering sketches and inspection reports, along with other related tasks.

The Engineering Department manages various operations throughout the City, overseeing approximately 85 miles of streets, 101 miles of water mains, and 2 elevated water storage tanks, serving around 8,500 water service customers. Additionally, the department is responsible for the administration of EGLE permits and compliance within the Rouge River watershed, including Quarton Lake.

Essential Skills:
  • Proficient knowledge in the inspection of roadways, sidewalks, and underground utility construction.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain engineering sketches and inspection documentation.
  • Experience collaborating with contractors.
  • Capability to work independently.
  • Strong representation skills when interacting with contractors and the public.
  • Familiarity with construction inspection software for daily reporting.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with additional education in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in Civil Engineering and/or Public Works Inspection, particularly in sewer, water main, and street paving projects.
  • A combination of relevant work experience and education will be considered.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Must possess reliable transportation for travel between work sites (mileage reimbursement provided).
  • Access to a mobile phone is required.
