Job Overview

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), a distinguished 501(c)(3) lineage-based membership organization committed to fostering patriotism, preserving American history, and enhancing educational opportunities for children, is in search of a skilled financial leader to fulfill the role of Controller.

This pivotal position oversees all financial functions, including the establishment and enforcement of accounting policies, management of financial systems, and coordination of the annual audit process.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Controller will also collaborate with executive and committee leadership to guide organizational strategy and financial planning.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of accounting professionals to ensure efficient financial operations.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive financial reporting system that provides timely and relevant information to executive leadership.
  • Safeguard the organization’s assets by implementing, monitoring, and enforcing robust policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP by accurately accounting for the organization’s transactions and directing the development of accounting methods and procedures.
  • Regularly assess and report on the financial status by collecting, interpreting, and analyzing financial data.
  • Advise executive leadership on budget recommendations for the organization.
  • Oversee the annual external audit process, ensuring the timely completion of accurate schedules and necessary documentation for auditors.
  • Manage banking and investment relationships, including cash management and investment activities.
  • Stay informed on federal, state, and local legal requirements, ensuring compliance and anticipating future regulatory changes.
  • Supervise systems related to payroll, benefits, procurement, travel expenses, and organizational policies.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or a related field is required.
  • Active CPA certification is mandatory.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in accounting and finance, with at least 3-5 years in a non-profit or association environment, along with prior management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP/FASB standards is essential.
  • Proven experience in establishing internal accounting controls and maintaining effective policies and procedures.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship management skills, particularly at the executive level, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all organizational levels.
  • Advanced proficiency in computer applications is required.
  • Strong project management skills with excellent follow-up capabilities.
  • Ability to thrive under pressure, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities while exercising sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of local and federal payroll compliance laws is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • The annual salary range for this position is between $130,000 and $170,000, determined by the candidate's overall experience.
  • This role offers the possibility of a hybrid remote work arrangement following the onboarding period.
  • We provide both annual and sick leave, with up to 12 days of each in the first year of employment, increasing with tenure.
  • Our organization observes 12 federal holidays plus two floating holidays each year.
