Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

We are seeking a highly motivated and compassionate Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, you will play a vital role in providing breastfeeding information and assistance to WIC clients, promoting lactation support, and conducting support group meetings.

• Provide breastfeeding information and assistance to WIC clients, including anticipatory education about the normal course of breastfeeding.
• Conduct support group meetings and assist the nutritionist with individual and group sessions.
• Contract participants at predetermined intervals to provide counsel, encouragement, and information to maintain lactation.
• Identify problems or potential problems necessitating referral to the nutritionist or WIC Designed Breastfeeding Expert (DBE).
• Recruit participants to attend nutrition education classes and maintain logs of patient contracts.
• Utilize the Crossroads system and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

• Ability to prepare required pre-clinic paperwork and maintain clinic flow.
• Good interpersonal relations skills, including cultural sensitivity.
• Office experience with public contact, keyboarding, filing, and organizing own workload.
• Experience in health fairs and other community activities.
• Ability to communicate with other agencies and assist clients to overcome barriers to treatment.

• Experience in healthcare settings and/or occupations.
