The Principal Project Engineer role is pivotal in orchestrating project strategies, timelines, and financial plans for extensive and intricate Research and Development (R&D) initiatives and new product innovations. This position entails leading a diverse, cross-functional project team that operates across various organizational boundaries.
In a cutting-edge additive manufacturing environment, this role is responsible for identifying project challenges, analyzing collected data, and formulating effective solutions and recommendations to ensure project success, meet deadlines, and enhance overall performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Formulates comprehensive project plans, timelines, and budgets for large-scale additive manufacturing initiatives, making necessary adjustments to maintain alignment with project goals.
- Oversees the entire project lifecycle from initial quotation to final production, guiding indirectly reporting team members in technical design, testing, and manufacturing.
- Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to synchronize and propel additive R&D Technology Readiness Level (TRL) efforts.
- Provides expert advice to clients and stakeholders regarding project scope and timelines, clarifying product and process requirements.
- Documents any delays, scope changes, and incidents impacting project timelines to ensure seamless project execution.
- Develops and maintains project schedules that clearly outline dependencies, deliverables, and critical paths.
- Monitors project progress, identifies obstacles, and implements solutions to minimize disruptions, while keeping stakeholders informed of status updates.
- Applies Earned Value (EV) techniques for effective budget and schedule management.
- Ensures that all projects and products meet established quality standards.
- Proactively identifies risks and opportunities, recommending solutions to mitigate issues.
- Prepares engineering estimates and proposals for potential large-scale projects to secure organizational support.
- Projects revenue forecasts, tracks expenses, and revises project cost estimates monthly to optimize profitability and achieve business objectives.
- Facilitates project activities across various functional teams to ensure alignment with overarching project goals.
- Creates detailed presentations to communicate project status to leadership teams.
Required Qualifications:
- A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field with at least 5 years of experience, or 12 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or granted refugee or asylee status).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships with customers.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and formal presentation skills.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proficient in developing and maintaining schedules using Microsoft Project.
- Experience in leading TRL advancement projects.
- Familiarity with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
- Knowledge of ERP systems, preferably SAP.
- Proficient in solid modeling, with a preference for Solidworks.
- Background in production manufacturing environments.
- Experience with Metal Additive Manufacturing.
- Skills in Risk and Opportunity management.
- PMP certification is advantageous.
