Position Overview
This role is dedicated to guiding and assisting the Indiana University Bloomington Student Government, a student-led organization committed to advocating for the student body.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a primary advisor for the IU Student Government, collaborating with a team of advisors.
- Foster and sustain robust relationships with student leaders and university colleagues, demonstrating effective conflict resolution abilities and providing ongoing organizational support.
- Offer personalized guidance and leadership training to the leaders of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of the IU Student Government.
- Engage in advisory activities by attending meetings, meeting one-on-one with students, and participating in IUSG events.
- Design and execute training sessions, team-building exercises, and retreats in partnership with IUSG student leadership.
- Assist students in navigating crises and conflicts within the organization, while serving as a liaison between IUSG and university officials.
- Support the IU Student Government Treasurer in managing an organizational budget of $150,000.
- Facilitate the distribution of IU Foundation account-related funds and scholarships.
- Ensure adherence to university purchasing policies and procedures.
- Guide the Committee for Fee Review submission process biannually.
- Provide insights on university policies and assist in planning reunions.
- Instruct the First Year Internship Program during the latter half of the fall semester to aid the development of new IUSG members.
- Support IUSG leaders during their participation in various leadership meetings and events.
- Collaborate with IUSG leaders and alumni to enhance alumni engagement and donor cultivation efforts.
- Attend IUSG Congress and Executive Cabinet meetings.
- Participate in campus-wide committees focused on student initiatives aligned with the Office of Student Life's priorities.
- May contribute to cross-functional committees to share best practices in student life.
General Duties
- Develop and implement initiatives aimed at enhancing student engagement and participation at various levels.
- Engage directly with students by attending events and gathering feedback to inform future initiatives.
- Collaborate with departmental staff and student organization leaders to achieve shared goals, often coordinating funding for initiatives.
- Assess and report on the effectiveness of student life initiatives to secure future funding.
- Guide student organizations on operations, budgeting, leadership, activities, and compliance.
- Plan and execute targeted outreach for student life initiatives to maximize participation.
- May provide mentorship to other Student Life Specialists and recommend process improvements.
Qualifications
Combinations of relevant education and experience may be considered. Additional education may substitute for work experience and vice versa.
Education
- Required: Bachelor's degree in public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, education, business, or a related field.
- Preferred: Master's degree in higher education student affairs or a related discipline.
Work Experience
- Required: 2 years in student services, higher education, or a related field.
- Preferred: 2 years of experience advising student organizations and leaders.
Skills
- Required: Proficient communication skills, professionalism, time management, and flexibility in a dynamic environment.
- Preferred: Knowledge of student affairs principles, current trends in student engagement, and proficiency in Microsoft 365 products.
Working Conditions
This position requires effective communication and the ability to operate standard office equipment. The role involves both sedentary work and mobility within an office and campus environment.
Work Location
This is an in-person position.
Advertised Salary
$50,000 annually, based on education and experience.
Work Hours
This position may require evening and weekend work and travel.
