Position Overview

This role is responsible for the fixation, processing, cutting, mounting, and staining of tissue samples for microscopic analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Memorial Hermann Southwest is in search of a Lead Histology Specialist to become part of our team on the Night shift. The schedule is from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

Candidates must possess HT or HTL certification. Eligibility to take the certification exam may be considered for recent graduates of a NAACLS accredited program.

Education: (None)

Licenses/Certifications: Registered (ASCP) Histotechnologist

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Histology Technician demonstrating leadership capabilities.
Principal Duties
  • Oversees, assesses, executes, and documents test outcomes, quality control, maintenance protocols, and related corrective actions in accordance with established policies and procedures; dedicates 50% of time to this function.
  • Evaluates and maintains technical protocols relevant to the department/facility; ensures competency requirements are met/exceeded for all workstations; develops procedures; demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of laboratory information systems.
  • Acts as a resource, mentor, and/or preceptor for other laboratory personnel and students in areas such as equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, performance improvement, production efficiency, and customer service.
  • Performs responsibilities in a manner that enhances quality patient care and customer satisfaction while promoting safety, cost-effectiveness, and a commitment to the performance improvement process; exemplifies leadership in customer service and laboratory performance enhancement.
  • Adheres to the policies, procedures, and initiatives of laboratory services, the hospital, and the system; comprehends, communicates, and complies with standards set forth by various governmental and accrediting bodies.
  • Facilitates staff/organizational/educational meetings/in-services as assigned.
  • Supports system and hospital customer service initiatives; identifies customer satisfaction issues and responds appropriately; fosters effective relationships with colleagues and customers.
  • Engages with hospital personnel, volunteers, physicians, and patients regarding specimens and orders entering the laboratory and reporting results according to laboratory policies and procedures, while being sensitive to customer needs.
  • Ensures safe care for patients, staff, and visitors; complies with all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards while managing time, supplies, productivity, and service quality within budgetary constraints.
  • Encourages individual professional growth and development by fulfilling requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based objectives that contribute to the organization's success; serves as a preceptor, mentor, and resource for less experienced staff.
