Position Overview

OBJECTIVE:

Under the guidance of the Program Director, the Teen Camp Counselor is tasked with engaging middle and high school summer campers while also supporting family-oriented initiatives. This role is essential in fostering a nurturing environment for the youth enrolled in the YMCA programs, contributing significantly to the development of strong character values in participants.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Oversee and implement the YMCA's teen camp initiatives while building rapport with middle and high school attendees.
  2. Provide vigilant and attentive supervision at all times.
  3. Act as a positive role model, showcasing professional conduct and understanding effective youth development strategies.
  4. Facilitate and deliver high-quality weekly programming, ensuring alignment with established expectations.
  5. Encourage a collaborative team environment through effective supervision, communication, and interpersonal interactions. Maintain regular communication with the supervisor.
  6. Focus on character development and uphold principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the teen programming.
  7. Engage in regular communication with parents and participate in family events as directed by the supervisor.
  8. Exhibit a thorough understanding of the YMCA's mission, objectives, policies, and standards, ensuring that the program adheres to the highest standards of excellence.
  9. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must be at least 19 years old, possess reliable transportation, and demonstrate a history of dependability.
  • Prior experience working with adolescents, preferably in educational or camp settings.
  • Experience in delivering programs in areas such as arts and crafts, science, college and career readiness, drama, or physical education is preferred.

Desirable Attributes:

  • A minimum of two years of experience working with pre-teens and teens.
  • Current college student.
  • Familiarity with the YMCA as a membership organization.
