Job Summary

This role provides comprehensive music therapy assessment and treatment interventions for pediatric patients, siblings, and families. The successful candidate will plan and implement individual and group therapy sessions for children, adolescents, and young adults and their families.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conduct group and individual music therapy sessions with patients
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date charting, data, and statistics
  • Maintain supplies and organize inventory
  • Support community and donor relations
  • Supervise music therapy volunteers
Essential Functions

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilitate music therapy interventions and activities that are age and developmentally appropriate
  • Implement music therapy assessment and treatment interventions for pediatric patients and families
  • Facilitate music therapy groups and one-on-one interventions
  • Build rapport and trust as part of patients' and families' therapeutic support system
  • Provide siblings with opportunities to express their emotions and concerns
  • Support special music-related events (visiting artists, concerts, workshops etc.)
  • Assist in managing patient-generated materials for Development/Donor Relations teams (i.e. song recordings, pictures, video, program data, and clinical stories)
  • Conduct music therapy presentations (in-services within LPCHS and to general public)
  • Provide support for special events
  • Communicate all pertinent information learned through interaction with patients to health care team
  • Attend pertinent multi-disciplinary rounds and patient care conferences
  • Document and report clearly and concisely, maintaining consistent records in charting system
  • Assist with development of workshops, special events, bedside sessions, and music groups for patient-generated works (Primarily patient recorded songs)
  • Engage in HIPAA best practices for consenting patients/families to release patient-generated materials (Stanford Children's Health Consent Form)
  • Work at establishing a good rapport and professional working relationship with all inter/intra departmental personnel
  • Conduct in-service training to other disciplines within Stanford Children's Health
  • Educate others on the use of music therapy and its role in the therapeutic process to promote healing and enhance coping skills
  • Foster strong community and donor relationships in support of Music Therapy Program
  • Train and supervise weekly volunteers
  • Maintain music supplies
Requirements

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Bachelor's Degree in a work-related field/discipline from an accredited college or university preferred.

Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC)

Ability to come up with creative ideas and activities

Ability to communicate effectively orally, verbally, and in writing

Ability to communicate information and ideas so that others understand, listen to and understand information and ideas presented and write so that others understand

Ability to conduct sessions to improve patients' mental and/or physical well-being

Ability to develop treatment plan to meet needs of patient/family, based on needs assessment, patient interests and objectives of therapy

Ability to quickly make sense of, combine and organize information into meaningful patterns

Ability to teach others how to express feelings and concerns through a variety of music modalities

Ability to use the Microsoft Office Suite of software applications

Knowledge of a wide variety of creative and expressive activities that are age and developmentally appropriate

Knowledge of human behavior and performance including individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.

Knowledge of individual and group behavior and dynamics and methods to encourage communication

Knowledge of the important components of medical records documentation that reflect patient/family reactions and evidence of progress or regression

Skill in active listening, communicating in writing effectively based on needs of person/group and talking to others to communicate effectively

Skill in adjusting actions appropriately in relation to others reactions

Skill in assessing the performance of oneself and/or others to make improvements or take corrective action

Skill in critical thinking and in identifying alternative solutions or approaches

Skill in perceptiveness-being aware of others reactions and understanding why they react the way they do

Skill in selecting and using methods and procedures appropriate for the situation

Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively
