Position Title

Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician (Days)

Position Summary / Career Interest:
This role is integral in supporting the precise preparation of medication orders, compounding, and maintaining accurate records to ensure the timely provision of pharmaceuticals. The technician will be responsible for preparing medications utilizing the correct techniques and equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, intravenous admixtures, chemotherapy preparations, total parenteral nutrition, oral bulk/unit-dose or prepackaged medications, compounds, and investigational drugs.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Execute all tasks as outlined by standard operating procedures or other directives from leadership under the direct oversight of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Utilize computer systems to accurately enter medication orders and gather necessary patient information.
  • Assist in the management of pharmacy inventory and record-keeping in compliance with state and federal regulations. Report medication discrepancies consistently.
  • Ensure the prompt distribution of prescribed medications and stock items as required.
  • Employ effective communication and listening skills. Keep supervisors informed of personal and team activities that may impact the department. Demonstrate proactive problem-solving abilities to address issues affecting departmental services.
  • Maintain a personal development plan and complete competency validation records.
  • Engage in personal goal setting and contribute to the ongoing development of team members.
  • Share knowledge by participating in the orientation and training of pharmacy staff and students.
  • If applicable, involvement in the quality management program is expected, aimed at enhancing services through process monitoring, data analysis, implementing improvements, and evaluating their effectiveness.
  • Responsibilities may include establishing and maintaining both long-term and short-term goals for the Quality Management Program; monitoring and documenting Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs) for progress towards Quality Improvement goals; and providing guidance and education to staff on Quality Management priorities and initiatives.
  • Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
  • Must be capable of performing the professional, clinical, and/or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • One or more years of experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital pharmacy providing comprehensive pharmacy services.
Required Licensure and Certification
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination or equivalent National Pharmacy Technician Certification examination in accordance with Board of Pharmacy registration requirements upon hire.
  • Pharmacy Technician Registration - State Board of Pharmacy upon hire.
  • The technician must maintain certification continuously and fulfill all continuing education requirements.
Preferred Licensure and Certification
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent National Pharmacy Technician Certification.
