Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Correctional Officer to join our team at the Waukesha County Jail. As a Correctional Officer, you will be responsible for supervising, interacting with, and providing for the care and custody of municipal, county, state, and federal inmates in our facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and interact with inmates, ensuring their safety and well-being
  • Enforce rules and regulations of the jail, maintaining order and discipline
  • Process inmates upon arrival and release, including documentation and inventory of property and money
  • Inspect incoming and outgoing mail, and supervise daily activities of inmate housing units
  • Perform and document inspections of housing areas and jail facilities, searching for contraband and identifying security, health, and safety concerns
  • Screen visitors and usher them through the facility, and escort inmates within and between facilities
  • Assign, supervise, and inspect the work of inmates involved in various activities, such as laundry, meal service, and cleaning
  • Settle disputes, prevent disturbances, and enforce proper conduct of inmates through counseling, warnings, and disciplinary action
  • Provide education to inmates on available work, treatment, religious, and educational opportunities
  • Observe, record, and respond to unusual or noteworthy behavior of inmates
  • Electronically monitor the physical location of inmates and document appropriately
  • Restore order and control the movement of inmates during disturbances and emergencies
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of post-high school work experience, preferably in a civil or military law enforcement unit or detention facility
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to handle difficult and complex incidents, and assume considerable responsibility within established guidelines
  • Ability to maintain a high level of visual and mental alertness, and exercise time management, organizational, and multi-tasking skills
  • Ability to recognize various types of inmate behavior, supervise, and control inmates, and secure their cooperation in the least restrictive means possible
  • Ability to establish professional boundaries with inmates, and act authoritatively and de-escalate heightened situations
  • Ability to competently and credibly testify in court, and utilize word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, prepare accurate records, and prepare oral and written reports
  • Ability to effectively present oral and written recommendations to supervisors, and think and act quickly under pressure
